Braves Minor League Player Faces Charges in Deadly Florida Hit-and-Run Incident
An 18-year-old minor league baseball player has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision in Florida, after being reported to authorities by the very organization that signed him less than a year earlier. Jonathan Matos Morales, a catcher within the Atlanta Braves farm system, stands accused of fleeing the scene of a devastating Monday morning crash on Interstate 75 in Manatee County.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:28 AM, resulted in the death of 34-year-old Stavan Albert (Owen) Facey, a father of four who was driving a semi-truck. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Morales allegedly lost control of his 2022 black Ford Mustang while weaving through traffic at high speed.
Dashcam footage released by investigators shows the Mustang passing the semi-truck on the right shoulder before swerving across multiple lanes. The vehicle then collided with a sport utility vehicle, which was violently propelled into the path of Facey's truck. The impact caused the semi-truck to overturn onto its side. The driver of the SUV, a 63-year-old man, sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Critically, the footage reveals that the Mustang driver paused briefly behind the wreckage before accelerating around the scene on the highway shoulder and fleeing. FHP spokesman Ken Watson later stated that, given the speed, weight of the truck, and limited reaction time, Facey had virtually no chance to avoid the collision.
Team Involvement Leads to Arrest
Following public appeals for information, staff at the Atlanta Braves' spring training facility, CoolToday Park in Venice, Florida, identified a vehicle matching the description on their grounds. The organization promptly contacted the Florida Highway Patrol.
'The Atlanta Braves organization contacted the Florida Highway Patrol advising they may have found that vehicle within their complex,' FHP spokesman Ken Watson told local media. 'Advising they felt 99.9-percent sure that they had the vehicle. We immediately dispatched troopers... and we were able to establish that was in fact the vehicle we were looking for, and then promptly able to make an arrest of our suspected driver.'
Morales, who was signed by the Braves in July 2025 and assigned to the rookie-level Florida Complex League, no longer appears on the team's roster. The franchise issued a statement describing him as a 'formerly signed' player and extending condolences to all affected, while pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Legal Proceedings and Aftermath
Jonathan Matos Morales was released from jail on a $200,000 bond under supervised release conditions, which included surrendering his passport. During bond arguments, his attorney emphasized Morales's previously clean legal record, though prosecutors noted a prior speeding citation from October for driving 81 mph in a 50 mph zone.
Born in Puerto Rico, Morales has been a U.S. citizen since childhood. Prior to his arrest, he had taken an assignment to play winter baseball for Puerto Rico's Cangrejeros de Santurce in November.
The human toll of the crash is profound. Stavan Albert Facey's partner, Kimberly Johnson, who is the mother of two of his young children, has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs, daily expenses, and childcare.
'I never imagined I would be in this position,' Johnson wrote in an online appeal. 'I am a single mother of two beautiful children, both under the age of three, and recently our lives were turned upside down by an unimaginable loss. The father of my children, my partner, passed away suddenly in a horrific accident, leaving us heartbroken and struggling to find our way forward.'

The case highlights the tragic consequences of reckless driving and the swift, cooperative action taken by a professional sports organization upon recognizing one of its vehicles was involved in a serious crime.
