LA Olympics Chief Issues Statement of Regret Over Maxwell Email Correspondence
Casey Wasserman, the prominent figure leading the Los Angeles Olympics organising committee, has publicly expressed profound regret following the release of 2003 email exchanges with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. The correspondence emerged in the latest collection of government documents concerning the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, made public on Friday.
Revealing Email Content from 2003
Among the disclosed communications was an email from Wasserman to Maxwell stating "I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?" In another message from April 2003, Maxwell offered Wasserman - who was married at the time - a massage that she claimed could "drive a man wild."
Further exchanges included discussions about massages and a particularly suggestive query from Maxwell about whether fog conditions during an upcoming visit would allow Wasserman to "float naked down the beach and no one can see you unless they are close up?" Wasserman's response was simply: "or something like that."
Wasserman's Official Statement of Regret
In a formal statement released on Saturday, Wasserman declared: "I deeply regret my correspondence with Ghislaine Maxwell," emphasising that these communications occurred "long before her horrific crimes came to light."
The sports executive further clarified: "I never had a personal or business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. As is well documented, I went on a humanitarian trip as part of a delegation with the Clinton Foundation in 2002 on the Epstein plane. I am terribly sorry for having any association with either of them."
Background Context and Legal Proceedings
Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on five counts of sex trafficking and abuse of minors, receiving a substantial 20-year prison sentence. The documents revealing these email exchanges were disclosed under legal requirements mandating the government to release files concerning Epstein and his confidant Maxwell.
Jeffrey Epstein took his own life in a New York jail cell in August 2019, merely a month after facing federal sex-trafficking charges. The ongoing release of documents continues to shed light on the extensive network associated with the disgraced financier.
Wasserman's Professional Profile and Olympic Role
Casey Wasserman established a highly successful sports and talent agency representing elite athletes across football, basketball, and baseball, alongside prominent Hollywood figures including Adam Sandler and Brad Pitt. More recently, he has gained significant attention as the leading figure behind Los Angeles' Olympic efforts.
His substantial lobbying influence played a crucial role in securing the 2028 Summer Olympics for the United States, marking the first summer games in the country since Atlanta 1996. Los Angeles previously hosted the prestigious event in 1984, and Wasserman's leadership is central to the current organisational efforts.
In personal developments, Wasserman divorced his wife of twenty years, Laura Ziffren Wasserman, in 2021. The emergence of these historical emails adds a complex dimension to the public profile of a man currently steering one of the world's most significant sporting events.
