Former President Donald Trump has launched a furious response to the latest release of documents related to convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, threatening legal action against Epstein's estate and accusing a former friend of orchestrating a conspiracy to destroy his political career.
Trump Breaks Silence Aboard Air Force One
The 79-year-old finally addressed the controversial document drop on Saturday while travelling aboard Air Force One en route to Florida. Trump claimed that emails included in the newly released tranche demonstrate that Epstein and his former associate-turned-nemesis Michael Wolff were actively "conspiring" to harm him politically.
Legal Threats Against Wolff and Epstein Estate
Speaking to reporters from the presidential aircraft, Trump declared his intention to pursue legal action, stating: "Wolff, who's a third-rate writer, was conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to hurt me politically or otherwise and that came through loud and clear."
He added: "So we'll probably sue Wolff on that… Maybe the Epstein estate, I guess. I don't know. But we'll certainly sue Wolff."
The documents reportedly contain emails between Wolff and Epstein in which Wolff suggests he could be the "bullet" to end Trump's 2016 White House campaign. In another communication, Wolff advises Epstein to "let (Trump) hang himself" during television interviews discussing their relationship.
Historical Association and Subsequent Distance
Trump and Epstein were once known to associate at high-profile social events and parties across Florida and New York before Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and before Epstein's criminal activities became public knowledge.
In a 2002 interview with New York Magazine, Trump commented on their relationship, saying: "I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side."
Trump has since sought to distance himself from Epstein following what has been described as an alleged falling out in 2004. While Trump's name appears in some documents within the files, these do not indicate any involvement in wrongdoing.
Claims of Absolution Without Personal Review
During his Air Force One remarks, Trump made the notable claim that the documents "absolve" him of any allegations regarding his connections to the disgraced financier, despite admitting he had not personally reviewed the materials.
He told reporters: "I didn't see it myself but I was told by some very important people that not only does it absolve me, it's the opposite of what people were hoping, you know, the radical left."
The documents represent only a portion of materials currently held by the Justice Department related to the Epstein case, which continues to generate significant political and legal controversy years after Epstein's death in prison while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
