Former US President Barack Obama has seemingly used an appearance on the Stephen Colbert Show to take a swipe at the current US President Donald Trump.
Obama's Appearance on Colbert
Obama appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, May 5. Colbert will soon leave the role as the late night host, with the show set to end this month.
Colbert mentioned that people have been saying the talk show host should run for the role of US President.
Colbert said: "How dumb do you think it is for people to say that I should run for President?"
Obama responded: "Well, the bar has changed."
"Let me put it this way, I think that you could perform significantly better than some folks that we've seen."
Context of the Swipe
Since Obama's second presidential term ended in January 2017, the US has had two leaders: Donald Trump, who served his first term from 2017 to 2021, and Joe Biden, who served from 2021 to 2025. Trump is now serving his second term.
Trump on February 5 shared a shocking post on social media which featured Obama and his wife as primates in a jungle. This video was later deleted, but Trump refused to apologise for the post and blamed a staff member, saying: "I didn't make a mistake."
Obama on Marital Tensions
Obama, just one day before the Colbert interview aired, revealed that some of the tension in his marriage to Michelle stemmed from Trump.
Speaking candidly to the New Yorker, the former president revealed that Trump's actions have pulled him back into the spotlight of politics "more than I would prefer."
Obama, 64, also admitted that his re-emergence in the political arena after eight years in the spotlight strained his marriage to Michelle.
"She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives," Obama said of his wife.
"It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her."
