Tottenham's New Head Coach Addresses Controversial Past Remarks
The newly appointed Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has publicly apologised for his previous comments concerning Mason Greenwood. In his first interview with the club's official media channels, De Zerbi expressed regret over any offence caused and emphasised his stance against violence towards women.
Fan Groups Voice Opposition to Appointment
De Zerbi's appointment faced significant opposition from several influential Tottenham fan groups. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust released a statement expressing "serious and far-reaching concerns" about the Italian's past remarks. Additional groups, including Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach, joined in criticising the decision.
The collective statement called upon both the club and De Zerbi to publicly reaffirm their commitment to core values such as equality, respect, and integrity. This backlash followed the confirmation of De Zerbi's five-year contract to replace interim manager Igor Tudor.
De Zerbi's Clarification and Apology
In response to the criticism, De Zerbi chose to address the issue directly in Italian to ensure clarity. "I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly," he stated. The coach highlighted his lifelong commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and standing against injustice.
"I am sorry if I offended anyone's feeling with this subject matter – I have a daughter and I'm very sensitive to these things, and I always have been," De Zerbi added. He explained that his intention was never to take a definitive stance on the Greenwood case but rather to express personal observations from their time together at Marseille.
Background on the Mason Greenwood Case
Mason Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, faced serious charges in 2022, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence emerged.
Greenwood, who denied all charges, joined Marseille on a permanent deal in 2024 while De Zerbi was managing the French club. During their tenure together, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good person" and expressed sadness over the player's portrayal in England, stating he knew a "very different person."
Tottenham's Deliberate Appointment Process
It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur carefully considered De Zerbi's past comments during the negotiation process before finalising his appointment. The club conducted thorough discussions with the coach regarding his remarks about Greenwood before proceeding with the contract.
Notably, De Zerbi's five-year agreement does not include a break clause in the event of Tottenham's relegation, a scenario the club has not faced since 1977. This demonstrates significant commitment from both parties despite the current challenges facing the team.
Looking Ahead to the Sunderland Challenge
De Zerbi now has over a week to prepare for his first match in charge, an away fixture against Sunderland next Sunday. The coach expressed confidence in his long-term vision for the club, stating, "I signed five years of contract because, for me, it is a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what."
He acknowledged the difficult period facing Tottenham but emphasised belief in the squad's quality. "I think we have to remember who we are and who the players are, because we have very big players and we have to work on their confidence and qualities," De Zerbi concluded, outlining his approach to revitalising the team's performance.
