Mel McLaughlin Returns to Seven News After Lung Cancer Surgery
Mel McLaughlin Returns to Work After Lung Cancer Surgery

Sports presenter Mel McLaughlin has made an emotional return to the Seven News sports desk on Sunday, following her recovery from major surgery for lung cancer. The 46-year-old broadcaster underwent a procedure earlier this year to remove a malignant tumour from her lung, along with a significant portion of the organ itself.

Emotional Return to Broadcasting

During her first broadcast back, McLaughlin told co-presenters Mark Ferguson and Angela Cox that it felt "great to be back" on air. She took a moment to express her gratitude to viewers for their overwhelming support during her health battle. "It's been truly overwhelming, and it's appreciated, so thanks, everyone," McLaughlin said with visible emotion.

Social Media Milestone

The presenter also marked her professional comeback with an emotional statement on Instagram, sharing a photograph of herself posing with colleagues in the studio. "First day back," she wrote alongside the image. "Remembered how to read and didn't run out of breath - I'll take that for now."

McLaughlin went on to praise her supportive work environment, describing her colleagues as "my wonderful, beautiful, dysfunctional work family" who "held my hand and dealt with my nerves and anxiety." She humorously added, "Poor kids having to put up with me! It's a start."

Overwhelming Support from Colleagues

The broadcaster expressed being "extremely overwhelmed and touched by all of the messages" she received, noting that many viewers had shared their own personal stories with her. Among the many well-wishers were fellow Seven presenters including Sally Bowrey, Natalie Barr, and AFL commentator Abby Holmes.

Sunrise star Natalie Barr commented that "Mel looked and sounded just perfect" during her return broadcast, while Sally Bowrey simply stated, "Great to see you back." Abby Holmes added her own heartfelt message: "You're the best. Welcome back."

Family History with Lung Cancer

McLaughlin's battle with lung cancer carries particular emotional weight as the same disease claimed the life of her older sister, Tara, a decade ago in 2015. Tara was just 39 years old when she passed away, leaving behind two children. This tragic family history led McLaughlin to become an ambassador for Lung Foundation Australia.

Neither McLaughlin nor her sister were smokers, leading medical professionals to suspect a potential genetic link that caused both siblings to develop the same illness ten years apart.

Public Diagnosis and Treatment Journey

The beloved presenter first went public with her devastating diagnosis in an exclusive Seven News interview with Mark Ferguson back in March. During that emotional conversation, McLaughlin revealed, "I was diagnosed with lung cancer in December. So that's led to surgery. I've had half my lung cut out."

She described the experience as "very traumatic" and "very triggering," explaining that "it's a lot of emotions. And also you don't want to worry anyone." The timing made the situation particularly difficult, as McLaughlin had to share the news with her family during Christmastime, bringing back painful memories of her sister's illness.

Remarkable Professional Dedication

Perhaps most astonishingly, McLaughlin continued working on air right up until the day before her operation. She hosted Melbourne's Boxing Day Test cricket coverage and then Sydney's Pink Test in early January, all while managing to schedule blood tests and medical scans between her broadcasting commitments.

Her return to the Seven News sports desk represents not just a professional comeback, but a significant personal milestone in her recovery journey. McLaughlin's openness about her health battle has resonated with many viewers who have faced similar challenges, creating a powerful connection between the presenter and her audience.
