New Biography Reveals Rory McIlroy's Early Attraction to Erica Stoll
A recently published book has brought to light allegations that Rory McIlroy had his sights set on his future wife, Erica Stoll, while he was still in a relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. The claims emerge from interviews with staff members who observed McIlroy's behaviour during the 2012 Ryder Cup.
While there is no evidence to suggest infidelity, the book indicates that McIlroy was "throwing every ounce of game he had" at Stoll when they first met. At that time, Stoll worked for the PGA of America and famously arranged a police escort for McIlroy after he overslept his alarm, an incident that sparked their initial connection.
WhatsApp Chatter and Ryder Cup Banter
According to reports, McIlroy's obvious attempts to chat up Stoll became a source of amusement among Ryder Cup personnel. Staff members allegedly exchanged lighthearted messages in WhatsApp group chats, complete with winking emojis, speculating whether McIlroy had "closed the deal" during the event. This behind-the-scenes banter highlights the instant rapport noted between the pair, with observers describing McIlroy as appearing "smitten."
McIlroy's relationship with Wozniacki spanned from 2011 to 2014, culminating in an engagement announcement in December 2013. However, just months later, McIlroy abruptly called off the wedding, citing cold feet and a realisation that he was not ready for marriage. He publicly stated, "The problem is mine," and wished Wozniacki happiness.
From Engagement to Divorce Drama
In 2015, McIlroy began dating Stoll, and they were engaged by the end of that year. The couple married in 2017 at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland, and welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in 2020. Despite the outward appearance of a fairy-tale romance, their marriage faced significant turmoil.
In May 2024, McIlroy filed for divorce, claiming the marriage was "irretrievably broken," only to withdraw the filing a month later. He explained that they had resolved their differences and looked forward to a new beginning as a family. This sudden reversal is characterised in the new book as evidence of McIlroy's "reckless" nature.
Impetuousness on and Off the Course
Golf journalist Alan Shipnuck, author of 'Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf's Most Human Superstar,' suggests that the divorce proceedings reflect McIlroy's impulsive tendencies. Shipnuck writes, "The short-lived divorce proceedings and hasty reconciliation said more about him than her," noting that such actions might be unwise for a high-profile athlete. He adds that this recklessness is part of what makes McIlroy appealing, both in golf and in personal matters.
Stoll has been a constant presence in McIlroy's career highs, including his victory at the Masters last year, which secured his first Green Jacket and completed a career Grand Slam. She also attended the 2025 Ryder Cup, where McIlroy helped Europe to a narrow 15-13 win over the United States.
As McIlroy returns to Augusta National, he aims to become only the fourth player in history to successfully defend his Masters title. The revelations in the new book add a layer of personal intrigue to his professional pursuits, shedding light on the complexities of his relationships and character.
