Australian Open 2026 Prize Money Hits Record £55.4m After 16% Rise
Australian Open 2026 prize money hits record £55.4m

The Australian Open has announced a historic prize money boost for its 2026 tournament, setting a new benchmark for the Grand Slam event. The total purse will rise by a significant 16 percent to reach £55.4 million, the largest in the competition's history.

Champions to Pocket £2.1 Million Each

This substantial increase means the two singles champions at Melbourne Park will each receive £2.1 million. This marks a notable jump from the £1.7 million awarded to Italy's Jannik Sinner and America's Madison Keys for their victories in 2025.

The prize money escalation is part of a broader strategy by Tennis Australia. "This 16 percent increase demonstrates our commitment to supporting tennis careers at every level," stated Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley. He highlighted efforts spanning from a 55 percent boost in qualifying prize money since 2023 to enhanced player benefits, all aimed at ensuring the professional game is sustainable for all competitors.

How the Grand Slams Compare

While the Australian Open's new fund is a record for the tournament, it still sits behind the US Open's 2025 total of £66.4 million. Last year, Wimbledon's total prize fund was £53.5 million, with the French Open offering £48.8 million.

The financial uplift at the Australian Open is designed to benefit players across the board. Even a first-round loser in 2026 will take home £74,500, a 14 percent increase from the previous year. The most substantial percentage hike, however, is reserved for the qualifying rounds, which see a 16 percent rise. Players exiting in the third round of qualifying will earn £41,500.

Investment in Tennis's Future

This prize money announcement is a key component of Tennis Australia's wider £100 million investment across the 'Summer of Tennis'. Craig Tiley framed this spending as crucial for the sport's foundation, saying it ensures "the sport's long-term health and commercial growth."

The 2026 Australian Open is scheduled to run from 18 January to 1 February at its traditional home of Melbourne Park.
