As China prepares for the vibrant celebrations of the Lunar New Year, a unique blend of tradition and innovation is taking center stage. In a striking display of technological progress, robots are joining people in the festivities, adding a futuristic flair to age-old customs.
Robotic Rehearsals in Beijing Mall
On a recent Friday, a dress rehearsal captivated curious onlookers at a mall in western Beijing. Four adorable humanoid robots, each standing approximately 95 centimeters tall, were outfitted in colorful lion costumes. Within minutes, they sprang into action, executing a series of precise movements: bending their knees, shifting left and right, and energetically shaking their masks in a rhythmic performance.
Technology Takes Center Stage
Ahead of the Lunar New Year, various fairs and activities are being organized across Beijing, with stages and props being meticulously set up. For the second consecutive year, one of these fairs will be dedicated to technology, where robots will undoubtedly steal the spotlight. Attendees can expect to witness these machines dancing, stacking blocks to construct miniature towers, skewering hawthorn berries to create sweet snacks, and even engaging in soccer matches.
"This year, the number of our robots has increased significantly," remarked Qiu Feng, a member of the organizing committee. "They will showcase a diverse range of performances, including dance, martial arts, Peking Opera, poetry recitals, and soccer demonstrations."
Enhanced Precision and High-Tech Vibe
Qiu further noted that while some events were available last year, the refinement of actions and the overall high-tech atmosphere have intensified this time around. China has been ramping up efforts to develop more advanced robots capable of performing varied activities with greater autonomy, powered by artificial intelligence and requiring less human intervention.
Despite these advancements, human assistance remains essential in certain scenarios, such as dressing the robots or repositioning them if they halt unexpectedly on a mini-soccer field. "Technology is evolving at a rapid pace and becoming increasingly sophisticated every day," Qiu added. "As long as we stay aligned with this trend, our fair will continue to progress and adapt to the times."
Startups Driving Innovation
The robots performing at the mall were developed by Chinese startups, including Booster Robotics. The company plans to display around 20 humanoid robots that will dance and play soccer autonomously. "This is an AI-driven environment," explained Ren Zixin, director of marketing at Booster Robotics. "Once the whistle blows, remote controls are set aside, and all decision-making and motion control are handled independently by the robots themselves."
This integration of robotics into Lunar New Year celebrations highlights China's commitment to technological innovation, blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge advancements to create unforgettable experiences for all.
