Final Fantasy XIV Online's game director has confirmed that the game will continue to be supported on PlayStation 4, but not for much longer. The popular MMORPG is currently available on Sony's 2013 hardware, but as Square Enix rolls out new updates and expansions, the aging console is struggling to keep up.
Limits of the PS4
According to game director Yoshi P, FFXIV is 'approaching the limits' of what the PS4 can handle. He estimates that the hardware likely has only a few more updates left, probably up until around version 8.3. The newly announced Evercold expansion will still launch on PS4, but players are urged to consider upgrading soon.
Yoshi P issued a clear warning: 'If you're still playing on PS4, you've got two years to save up for a PS5.' This announcement may disappoint those still using the older console, but it makes sense as the PS4 is now over a decade old, with very few new titles launching on the platform.
Console Generation Shift
Moreover, even the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are nearing the end of their generation cycles. Both Sony and Microsoft are reportedly preparing to launch new consoles in 2027, which would make the PS4 two generations old. For players not ready to upgrade, the cost of hardware adds to the challenge. The PlayStation 5 recently saw a global price hike, with the base model now costing £519.99 and the Pro version reaching £789.99.
On a positive note, the PC system requirements for FFXIV remain unchanged, though players will still need sufficient install space for new expansions and updates. Square Enix is also expanding to new platforms, with a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 port announced for August 2026. This version will launch with a free month-long early access period, after which a separate subscription will be required.
There is currently no official end date for PS4 support, so players are safe for now. However, the message is clear: the clock is ticking for those still playing on Sony's older console.
