Nestlé has announced a significant expansion of its baby formula recall due to potential contamination with food poisoning toxins, following a similar alert issued last month. The Swiss multinational food and drink processing corporation has widened its safety action to include additional batches of its SMA infant nutrition products.
Expanded Recall Details
The latest recall specifically targets 800g packs of SMA Advanced First Infant Milk with a best-before date of December 2027, marked with batch code 53390346AB. According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), this particular product was distributed exclusively in Northern Ireland. This development comes after Nestlé's initial recall in January of several SMA infant formula and follow-on formula batches over fears they contained the cereulide toxin.
Source of Contamination
The FSA revealed last Friday that the contamination originated from arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, an ingredient added to the formula that was found to be carrying the toxin. Cereulide toxin can cause illness in infants, leading to symptoms including abdominal cramps and general sickness.
Nestlé has emphasised that this expanded recall is being conducted "out of an abundance of caution," noting that there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to their products. The company has stated it is now conducting comprehensive testing of products for the toxin presence.
Affected Product Range
The recall now encompasses a broad range of Nestlé's SMA infant nutrition products, including:
- SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk
- SMA Anti Reflux
- SMA Alfamino
- SMA First Infant Milk
- SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk
- SMA Comfort
- SMA Lactose Free
Industry-Wide Concerns
Other major manufacturers are facing similar concerns about cereulide contamination. Danone issued a recall on January 23 for a batch of its Aptamil baby formula product, specifically the 800g pack with an expiry date of 31 October 2026. While only one batch sold in the UK was affected according to the FSA, additional batches in other countries were also impacted.
Investigations have revealed that the toxin contamination originated from a shared, third-party ingredient supplier used by multiple manufacturers in the infant formula industry.
Company Statement and Safety Measures
In an official statement, Nestlé declared: "We want parents and caregivers to know that the safety of our products and the well-being of infants is our top priority. Following the detection of a quality issue in an ingredient provided by a leading supplier, Nestlé has undertaken testing of all arachidonic acid (ARA) oil and corresponding oil mixes used in the production of its potentially affected infant formula products."
The company added: "We want to reassure parents and families: we have taken the necessary steps in impacted countries, in close alignment with authorities, to recall all potentially affected products. This is to prioritise the health and well-being of families and their babies."
Official Guidance for Parents
The Food Standards Agency has issued clear guidance for consumers:
- Parents with any affected products should stop using them immediately
- Switch to an alternative formula product
- Contact their GP or NHS 111 if their baby has already consumed the recalled formula
- If formula is prescribed, consult with a pharmacist or doctor before switching to an alternative
More detailed information about specific recalled batches can be found through official channels including the Food Standards Agency website and Nestlé's corporate site.
