At least four people have been confirmed dead and dozens more injured after two trains collided at a station on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The accident occurred at Bekasi Timur Station when the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train crashed into the rear of a stationary commuter train.
Details of the Collision
The commuter train, which was stopped at the station, had a women-only carriage at the rear. This carriage suffered severe damage, trapping several passengers. State-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia reported that four people were killed and 38 passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams are still working to reach five passengers trapped in the wreckage, and authorities fear the death toll could rise.
Eyewitness Accounts and Response
Passengers reportedly screamed as the trains collided. Local television and social media footage showed panicked passengers at the station, while dozens of people rushed to the scene seeking news of loved ones. All 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek train were safe, officials confirmed. Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri stated that the cause of the accident is under investigation. The railway company has issued an apology to customers.
