Households across the UK have a fresh opportunity to slash their energy bills this winter, thanks to a returning initiative from one of the country's major suppliers. EDF Energy has relaunched its popular 'Sunday Saver Challenge', offering qualifying customers the chance to earn completely free electricity on four specific Sundays throughout January and February 2026.
How the Sunday Saver Challenge Works
The scheme is designed to encourage customers to move their daily electricity consumption away from the peak evening period, which runs from 4 pm to 7 pm on weekdays. Participants with a working smart meter who registered before the deadline can earn credit for the following Sunday based on how much energy they shift to off-peak times.
The more energy moved, the greater the reward. EDF states that customers can earn between four and 16 hours of free electricity on each of the designated reward days. Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, commented: "January is a time when many people look for new ways to save after the festive period, so we're delighted to resume our Sunday Saver challenge."
Key Dates for Free Power
EDF has confirmed that the earned free electricity can be used on the following four Sundays:
- January 18
- January 25
- February 1
- February 8
The challenge officially began on Monday, January 5, with registration having closed on January 4. Participants can track their progress and see their estimated free electricity via the Energy Hub within their 'MyAccount' portal on EDF's website.
A Timely Saving Amid Rising Costs
This initiative arrives as millions of Britons face increased energy costs this winter. The industry regulator, Ofgem, increased its energy price cap by 2% in the final quarter of 2025, with a further 0.2% rise taking effect from January 1, 2026. This adjustment means a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit now faces an annual bill of approximately £1,758.
EDF highlights that the scheme not only saves money but also supports the grid's sustainability. "Over 210,000 customers have been rewarded with free electricity as a result of adjusting their daily usage habits, reducing their carbon footprint and taking steps to contribute to a more sustainable electricity grid," Hughes added.
Simple Tips to Earn Free Electricity
EDF suggests that earning rewards can be straightforward. Simple behavioural changes can make a significant difference. The provider advises actions such as charging phones and laptops outside of peak hours, running the dishwasher in the morning, or doing batch cooking at the weekend.
"We know changing habits can be tricky, but we hope you're up for the challenge!" states guidance on EDF's website. For those who missed the registration window, the details serve as a useful reminder of the potential savings available through flexible energy use and smart meter technology.
