Western Intelligence Reports Russia Sending Drones to Iran for War Effort

Russia is close to finalising a phased shipment of drones, medicine, and food to Iran to bolster its war effort against the United States and Israel, according to a report from Western intelligence sources. Senior Iranian and Russian officials began secretly discussing the delivery of drones shortly after Israel and the US launched their first attack on Tehran last month, as revealed by two officials briefed on the intelligence in a report to The Financial Times.

Secret Discussions and Shipment Timeline

Moscow initiated its deliveries in early March, with expectations that they would be completed by the end of the month, according to Western intelligence assessments. This shipment of drones would mark the first concrete evidence of Moscow's lethal support to Iran since the conflict began, highlighting a deepening alliance between the two nations.

Russia has maintained a close alliance with Tehran throughout the ongoing war, building on years of support from Iran for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly asserted that Russia is providing intelligence to Iran, adding a layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape.

Zelensky's Claims and Diplomatic Maneuvers

On Wednesday, Zelensky claimed that Moscow had attempted to blackmail the United States by offering to cease sharing military intelligence with Iran if Washington would, in return, cut off Kyiv from its intelligence data. Earlier in the week, he stated he possessed "irrefutable" evidence that Russia continues to provide intelligence to Iran, telling Reuters he had seen the data but providing no further specifics.

When questioned about the drone shipments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Financial Times, "There are a lot of fakes going around right now. One thing is true — we are continuing our dialogue with the Iranian leadership." This statement underscores the ongoing diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Tehran amid escalating tensions.

Iran's Role in Drone Warfare and Regional Implications

Iran has been a key supplier of Shahed drones, which have become a vital component of Russia's artillery in its war against Ukraine. Moscow has deployed hundreds of Shahed drones nightly during its offensive, prompting Kyiv to develop expertise in defensive drone warfare. Zelensky noted on Wednesday that Gulf states are showing strong interest in Ukraine's experience in defending against drones, indicating potential new partnerships.

In a post on X, Zelensky elaborated, "We already see that not only 'Shaheds' are being used in the region, but there is also growing evidence of the use of FPV drones. This is modern warfare, and everyone must be prepared for it. Ukraine has this expertise, and in exchange for our support we need help in areas where we face greater challenges." He emphasised the need for protection against ballistic threats and financial resources for defence, proposing a mutually beneficial partnership to strengthen security through coordinated actions.

Zelensky added, "The situation in the world now is such that only coordinated and joint actions can guarantee real results and genuine security. We are being blocked in Europe, and as long as this risk remains, we must seek out additional opportunities to strengthen ourselves. The Middle East and the Gulf are the right direction and serious opportunities to make Ukraine stronger." This highlights Ukraine's strategic pivot towards Gulf states as it navigates complex international dynamics and seeks to enhance its defensive capabilities amid ongoing conflicts.
