Julian Nagelsmann Told to Resign or Face Sacking After Germany's World Cup Exit
Nagelsmann Given Ultimatum After Germany World Cup Exit

The German Football Association (DFB) has given Julian Nagelsmann a brutal ultimatum: resign or be sacked, following Germany's shocking World Cup exit to Paraguay. Jurgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to take over, with the former Liverpool boss reportedly open to managing his country.

Germany's World Cup Exit

Germany were eliminated in the round of 32 on Monday, losing 4-2 on penalties to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw. Jonathan Tah had a goal controversially ruled out in extra time before missing a decisive spot-kick in the shootout. This marks Germany's third consecutive World Cup knockout stage failure since winning the tournament in 2014.

Nagelsmann, who has two years left on his contract, initially insisted he would not step down. However, Sky Germany reports that after a meeting with DFB chiefs, the 38-year-old has been told to consider his position or face the axe. The process is said to be independent of Klopp's potential appointment, but it would pave the way for his return to management after two years away.

Klopp's Availability

Klopp, 59, has been working as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer since January 2025, overseeing their network of clubs including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls. He has also been working as a pundit for German broadcaster Magenta at the World Cup. When asked about replacing Nagelsmann, Klopp said: "I understand that my name is being mentioned. But this isn't the moment to talk about it - and certainly not with me."

Germany's exit means they have not won a knockout game at the World Cup since the 2014 final. They were eliminated at the group stage in 2018 under Joachim Low and in 2022 under Hansi Flick. Nagelsmann admitted: "If you exit after the first stage, it's not enough for German football. This is now the third elimination in a row, so we are not part of the first-class teams any more. I am disappointed."
