Citizens Advice has issued a stark warning that it is currently delivering "crisis support" to struggling households every thirty seconds, as the nation braces for imminent increases in essential bills including council tax and water charges from April.
Record Demand for Emergency Assistance
The prominent advisory service revealed it has already assisted more than 51,000 individuals with crisis support in the current year alone. The data indicates that renters, disabled people, and single parents are among the demographic groups most likely to seek this urgent assistance.
When broader cost-of-living issues are considered—such as energy bill difficulties and council tax arrears—the total number of people seeking help from Citizens Advice soars to approximately 175,000.
Household Budgets at Breaking Point
The charity emphasized that these alarming figures demonstrate how many household budgets have already "gone beyond breaking point." For those receiving help, average debt has reached a record high of £9,500, representing a significant 12% increase compared to the previous year.
Disturbingly, more than a third of this debt (42% on average) consists of arrears on essential household bills, including energy and council tax payments that families are struggling to meet.
Anticipating Further Financial Pressure
Citizens Advice anticipates that debt levels will continue to escalate, with global instability threatening additional price shocks and essential bills scheduled to rise in April. While acknowledging that government measures—including scrapping the two-child benefit limit and reducing energy bills from April—represent "steps in the right direction," the organization insists that more comprehensive assistance is urgently required.
Calls for Targeted Support Measures
The charity is advocating for several specific interventions to address the growing crisis:
- Better-targeted support for those struggling most significantly with energy bills
- Enhanced assistance with rental costs for vulnerable households
- Accelerated action to help people escape from mounting debt burdens
Leadership Voices Concern
Citizens Advice chief executive Dame Clare Moriarty expressed grave concern about the situation, stating: "Our data reveals the scale of the problem facing people—households are buckling under cost-of-living pressures, and too many are reaching crisis point."
She continued: "Every day our advisers see people at breaking point, with nowhere left to cut back and debts spinning out of control. Now, worrying global events look likely to bring fresh challenges to already stretched budgets."
Dame Clare concluded with a direct appeal: "That is why the Government must give a lifeline to the households struggling the most. This should include help with rent costs, better-targeted support with energy bills, as well as measures to tackle record-breaking levels of debt."
The warning comes at a critical juncture, with millions of households facing increased financial pressure as essential bills rise amid ongoing economic uncertainty and global instability that threatens further price volatility in essential goods and services.
