Britain's largest railway franchise has taken the extraordinary step of issuing a blanket "do not travel" alert to passengers across southeast England following a series of significant operational incidents that have crippled services on Wednesday morning.
Major Disruption Across Multiple Operators
The comprehensive travel warning affects three major train operators – Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express – all of which operate under the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) franchise. The unprecedented advisory urges passengers to avoid travelling "if at all possible" due to what has been described as "multiple incidents" causing severe network-wide disruption.
Critical Incidents Reported
Among the most serious incidents reported is a train derailment that occurred inside a depot facility located in Selhurst, situated in south-east London. This significant event has compounded existing problems across the network.
Compounding the disruption is a separate but equally critical fault affecting the signalling system between London Blackfriars and Norwood Junction. This technical failure has created a cascade of service cancellations and severe delays across multiple key routes.
Official Guidance to Passengers
Southern has provided specific guidance to affected passengers, stating: "If you are travelling on our network today, your journey may be delayed and you may need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. If you can, please delay your journey until later today."
The operator has advised passengers to check their specific train services before attempting to travel and to allow an additional 60 minutes for any journeys that cannot be postponed.
Extensive Service Suspensions and Alterations
National Rail Enquiries has confirmed that the signalling fault has resulted in fewer available rail lines between Norwood Junction and London Blackfriars. Trains operating on the limited available lines must travel at significantly reduced speeds, creating bottlenecks throughout the network.
This has led to the suspension of services on several critical routes including:
- London Bridge to East Grinstead
- Orpington to Luton
- Brighton to Cambridge
- Bedford to Three Bridges
Significant Route Modifications
The disruption has forced operators to implement substantial alterations to normal service patterns:
- Trains that typically operate between Welwyn Garden City and Sevenoaks are now only running between London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks
- Services between Rainham and Luton are restricted to operating only between Rainham and Dartford
- Trains that normally run between Horsham and Peterborough, or between Brighton and Bedford, may be diverted via Selhurst instead of Norwood Junction
Scale of the Franchise Operation
Govia Thameslink Railway, which also includes the Great Northern operator, represents the UK's largest railway franchise measured by passenger volume. The company carries approximately 18% of all train journeys made across the United Kingdom, highlighting the extensive impact of today's disruption on commuters and travellers throughout the southeast region.
The combination of the Selhurst depot derailment and the critical signalling system failure has created one of the most significant rail disruptions in recent memory, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers during the crucial morning travel period.
