Woman in 20s dies in M2 Christmas Eve crash as festive traffic peaks
Woman dies in M2 crash on Christmas Eve

A young woman has tragically lost her life following a single-vehicle collision on the M2 motorway on Christmas Eve afternoon.

Details of the fatal collision

The incident occurred shortly before 12:50pm on the London-bound carriageway, close to Junction 4 for the Medway services. According to Kent Police, the woman, who was in her 20s and from the Faversham area, was driving a black Volkswagen T-Roc when it collided with the central reservation and overturned.

Emergency services, including South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities confirmed there were no other passengers in her vehicle and no other cars were involved in the collision.

Major disruption on key getaway day

The crash caused significant disruption on one of the busiest travel days of the festive period. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit attended, and the London-bound carriageway was closed between Junctions 5 and 4 for several hours to allow for investigation and recovery.

National Highways warned at 4:40pm that the road “is likely to remain closed for some time”. The closure was lifted later in the evening, but it caused considerable delays during the peak of Christmas travel. The RAC had estimated that 4.2 million separate getaway trips by car would take place on 24 December, while the AA predicted over 22 million cars would be on UK roads.

Police appeal for information

Kent Police are now urging witnesses to come forward to help piece together the circumstances leading to the fatal crash. They are particularly keen to hear from any motorists who may have witnessed the incident itself, or who saw the black Volkswagen T-Roc travelling on the M2 prior to the collision.

Investigators are also asking anyone with dashcam footage that might be relevant to contact them. Witnesses are asked to call the police on 01622 798538, quoting the reference number BS/AW/092/25.
