A 39-year-old suspect has been taken into custody in eastern Austria following the discovery of rat poison in HiPP baby food jars placed on supermarket shelves. The investigation was launched after a contaminated jar was purchased in Eisenstadt on 18 April, prompting authorities to probe suspected intentional endangerment of the public.
Recall and Extortion
HiPP, the baby food manufacturer, had previously recalled certain batches of its products in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic as a precautionary measure. The company stated it was a victim of extortion, having received a message from an unspecified blackmailer before alerting the police. Authorities confirmed that five tampered jars were seized before any consumption occurred, with no reports of anyone ingesting the contaminated product.
Investigation Details
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which has raised concerns across Europe. Police are continuing their inquiries to determine the motive behind the act and whether the suspect acted alone. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and check product labels for any signs of tampering.
