Stepfather Receives Life Sentence for Murder of Five-Month-Old Stepson

A violent stepfather has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his five-month-old stepson in what medical experts described as the worst injuries they had ever witnessed on an infant. Thomas Morgan, aged 29, was handed a minimum term of 19 years behind bars after being convicted of killing Jensen-Lee Dougal at the family home in Clydach, Swansea Valley, Wales.

Catastrophic Injuries Described by Medical Professionals

Little Jensen-Lee Dougal suffered catastrophic brain damage, multiple fractures, and extensive retinal bleeding in both eyes during the violent attack on March 31, 2024. Professor Stavros Stivaros from Royal Manchester Children's Hospital stated that anyone witnessing such brutality toward a baby would have intervened immediately to prevent it.

The medical expert explained that Jensen-Lee would have lost consciousness almost instantly from the severity of the shaking, and that the injuries could not possibly have resulted from rough play or attempted resuscitation. The infant also sustained bleeding in his spinal column, damage to elbow and ankle joints, and multiple rib fractures.

Violent Attack Followed Heated Argument

The court heard that on the day of the murder, Morgan had engaged in a 90-minute abusive text exchange with his ex-girlfriend Georgia Griffiths, during which he called her derogatory names including "stinking rat" and "stinking little dog." Prosecutors argued that this confrontation had "flipped some kind of switch" in Morgan, leaving him full of rage when he returned home to care for Jensen-Lee alone.

Caroline Rees KC, prosecuting, told the court that Morgan had "seriously abused the trust placed in him" by Jensen-Lee's mother, Jordan Dougal. The stepfather had moved into the family home just two months before the fatal attack, after beginning a relationship with Dougal in December 2023.

Deceptive Account and Failed Cover-Up

Morgan claimed that Jensen-Lee had vomited and needed a nappy change, and that when he returned with clean clothing, he found the baby limp and unresponsive. The defendant alleged he shook the infant to revive him, performed back taps to clear airways, and attempted CPR because he believed Jensen-Lee was choking.

However, medical experts completely dismissed this defense, confirming that the brain injuries were catastrophic and inconsistent with resuscitation attempts. Morgan also claimed he couldn't call emergency services due to a speaker problem with his phone, yet managed to contact the baby's mother at work to report that Jensen-Lee had stopped breathing.

Tragic Aftermath and Family Heartbreak

After neighbors called 999, paramedics spent 45 minutes performing CPR on Jensen-Lee and managed to re-establish a pulse. The infant was transported to University Hospital Wales in Cardiff, where CT scans revealed the devastating extent of his brain injuries. The following day, his mother made the heartbreaking decision to switch off life support, with Jensen-Lee dying in her arms.

In a victim impact statement, Jordan Dougal described her overwhelming grief and trauma, stating: "I live with overwhelming grief, trauma and emotional pain. I never had the chance to hear Jensen-Lee say he loved me. I will never hear him call me 'mammy'. I will never see him take his first steps, speak his first words, start school, or grow into the person he was meant to be."

Justice Delivered but Grief Remains

Sentencing Morgan, Mrs Justice Stacey noted that the defendant had lied to police and everyone he spoke to about the incident. She stated: "What we do know is that... You shook Jensen-Lee so violently that you caused extensive injuries. The violent shaking with Jensen-Lee's head moving back and forward quickly accelerating and decelerating may have been very brief but it was hard enough to cause his extensive internal head injuries that caused his death."

Detective Chief Inspector Lianne Rees of South Wales Police acknowledged that while the conviction brings some measure of justice, it does not ease the profound heartbreak Jensen-Lee's family continues to endure. She paid tribute to the members of the public, first responders, and medical professionals who attempted to save the infant's life, as well as the incredible dignity shown by Jensen-Lee's family throughout the painful legal process.
