A serious train collision occurred near Indonesia's capital on Monday, resulting in at least three fatalities, according to officials. The incident took place at a station in the suburb of Bekasi, where a long-distance train slammed into the rear of a stationary commuter train.
Details of the Crash
The Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train crashed into the rear car of a commuter train that was stopped at Bekasi Timur Station, causing severe damage to the car, which had been designated for women only—a common practice to prevent harassment. Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri reported that 29 victims have been evacuated to three nearby hospitals. An investigation is currently underway.
Eyewitness Accounts and Response
Local television footage and social media videos showed panicked passengers at the station. First responders and residents worked together to evacuate passengers from the train cars, while dozens of people rushed to the station seeking news of their family members. The state-owned railway company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, issued an apology through its vice president for corporate communications, Anne Purba. She stated that all efforts are focused on evacuating passengers and crew, as well as assisting victims, with safety as the top priority. Purba also confirmed that commuter rail service in the area has been disrupted.
Historical Context of Railway Accidents
Accidents are common on Indonesia's aging railroad network. In January 2024, two trains collided in West Java province, killing at least four people. In October 2013, a passenger train slammed into a minibus at an unguarded crossing in West Java, resulting in 13 deaths. Additionally, in 2010, a train from Jakarta plowed into the rear of a train sitting at a station in Central Java province, killing 36 people.
