Alison Hammond Expresses Desire for Dramatic Career Shift
Ebullient Brummie presenter Alison Hammond has made a heartfelt plea to television executives, revealing her ambition to transition from daytime TV hosting to a coveted role in a major drama series. The popular This Morning co-host specifically identified her dream opportunity: a cameo appearance in Netflix's hit period drama, Bridgerton.
From Big Brother to Bridgerton Superfan
Since rising to fame through Big Brother in 2002, Alison Hammond has built an impressive television career spanning over two decades. Her extensive CV includes presenting duties on ITV's flagship daytime show This Morning, The Great British Bake Off, and numerous other programs. She has also demonstrated her acting capabilities through appearances on medical drama Doctors and children's series The Dumping Ground.
During a recent appearance on her This Morning co-host Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show, Hammond confessed her ultimate career aspiration lies beyond the daytime television format where she has become a household name. "I love Bridgerton," she explained enthusiastically to O'Leary. "It's so diverse, you see black people in that time... I just love it."
Direct Appeals to Bridgerton's Creative Team
The television personality revealed she has already taken proactive steps toward realizing her dream, directly approaching key decision-makers behind the popular Netflix series. "I want to be in it," Hammond declared. "So I have asked Jess [showrunner Jess Brownell] if I can be in the show, and I asked Shonda [executive producer Shonda Rhimes] but I don't think it's going to happen."
Despite her current status as one of Britain's most recognizable television presenters, Hammond clarified that acting was her original career aspiration. She disclosed that she "kind of" trained as an actor during her formative years, attending drama workshops run by Central Television from age eleven. Financial constraints prevented her family from sending her to drama school, redirecting her path toward presenting instead.
Bridgerton Podcast Host and Behind-the-Scenes Access
Hammond's passion for the Regency-era drama recently earned her a significant professional opportunity. In January, Netflix selected her to host the Official Bridgerton Podcast, recognizing her status as a superfan of the series. "They came to me, and it was literally a no-brainer," Hammond explained. "I'm a busy girl, I had no time, but I made the time. It had to be done. Because I love Bridgerton. I love escapism. I love the magic."
Her podcast hosting duties have granted her unique behind-the-scenes access to the production. "I've done a little bit of behind the scenes on the show," Hammond told Bridgerton fansite Shondaland. "And I've gotten to see all the extras and how it works. I think I even tried on Queen Charlotte's wig."
Dream Role: Lady Danbury
If her appeals to Bridgerton's producers prove successful, Hammond has already identified her ideal character: Adjoa Andoh's formidable Lady Danbury. "I like to watch what's going on," she said, drawing parallels between herself and the observant aristocratic character. "Observe, see what's happening. Maybe a little bit of a gossip here and there but nothing too extra."
Hammond elaborated on the character similarities she perceives: "I'm the sort of person who probably stays in positions a bit too long and needs to spend a bit more time alone and have more holidays. And I feel like Lady Danbury needs a bit more time to herself."
She contrasted this with another prominent Bridgerton character, stating: "I don't think I'd be like Mrs. Whistledown because I just can't be bothered. I won't have the time to do all the writing business. I think I'm more of an observer, which I think Lady Danbury is. I mean, she knows what's going on. She has all the gossip. She's the one who delivers it. She gives people advice, and that is me."
Balancing Multiple Television Commitments
Despite her busy schedule that includes This Morning, For the Love of Dogs, and appearances on numerous celebrity reality shows including Coach Trip, MasterChef, The Masked Singer, and Celebs Go Dating, Hammond remains determined to pursue her acting ambitions. Her revelation highlights the ongoing tension many television personalities face between established presenting roles and unfulfilled creative aspirations.
While Hammond acknowledges the practical challenges of securing a Bridgerton cameo, her public appeal to series bosses represents both a personal career goal and a testament to the show's cultural impact. The diversity and representation within the period drama have particularly resonated with Hammond, making her desired transition from daytime television to dramatic acting both professionally and personally significant.
