Hollywood Icon Kim Novak Voices Strong Opposition to Sydney Sweeney's Casting in Biopic
In a striking new interview with The Times of London, legendary actress Kim Novak has launched a pointed critique against Sydney Sweeney, who has been cast to portray her in the forthcoming biographical film Scandalous. The project focuses on Novak's 1950s romantic involvement with the iconic entertainer Sammy Davis Jr.
Novak's Direct Criticism of Sweeney's Suitability
The 93-year-old screen icon did not mince words, stating unequivocally that the 28-year-old Sweeney is 'totally wrong' for the part. Novak emphasised that she 'would never have approved' of this casting decision. She further appeared to reference Sweeney's well-known physique, remarking that the younger actress 'sticks out so much above the waist', a characteristic Novak implied was not true of herself during that era.
Concerns Over the Film's Direction and Focus
Novak expressed significant apprehension that the movie, which reports indicate is currently stalled in pre-production, will overly sexualise her historical relationship with Davis Jr. She fears the narrative will concentrate excessively on the physical aspects rather than the genuine emotional and intellectual connection they shared.
'There's no way it wouldn't be a sexual relationship because Sydney Sweeney looks sexy all the time. She was totally wrong to play me,' Novak told the publication. She stressed that their attraction was rooted in having much 'in common', particularly a shared desire to be recognised for their talent and character rather than superficial appearances.
Background of the Scandalous Project
The biopic Scandalous was first announced in October 2024, with Colman Domingo slated to make his feature directorial debut. The cast includes David Jonsson, 32, set to portray the late Sammy Davis Jr., who passed away in 1990 at age 64. The film aims to depict the intense racial prejudice and public backlash the interracial couple faced in 1950s Hollywood.
Novak recounted the severe racist opposition they endured, including an horrific incident where Davis Jr. was allegedly served beer contaminated with urine. She described how studio pressure, particularly from Columbia Pictures boss Henry Cohn, ultimately forced the couple to separate. Cohn reportedly threatened Davis Jr. with mob violence if the relationship continued.
Novak's Previous Objections and Sweeney's Response
This is not the first time Novak has voiced disapproval. In August 2025, she told The Guardian she disliked the film's title, asserting 'I don't think the relationship was scandalous.' She reiterated that their bond was based on mutual respect and shared struggles in the industry.
Despite the criticism, Sydney Sweeney has expressed enthusiasm for the role. In October 2025, she told People magazine she was 'incredibly honored' to play Novak and found the story personally relatable, citing parallels with modern Hollywood scrutiny and image control.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sydney Sweeney for comment but has not received an immediate response.
