Matt Willis Recalls Stranger's Intervention Leading to Rehab After Street Collapse
Matt Willis: Stranger Carried Him to Rehab After Street Collapse

Matt Willis Opens Up About Stranger's Lifesaving Act During Addiction Struggle

Busted musician Matt Willis has candidly shared the harrowing moment a stranger intervened to help him after he was discovered unconscious on a street, leading directly to his admission into a rehabilitation centre. The 42-year-old bassist, who has been transparent about his long-term battles with alcohol and substance abuse since his teenage years, described this episode as a critical turning point in his journey toward sobriety.

The Desperate Flight from Help

On his podcast, On The Mend, Willis recounted how his addiction reached a crisis point, prompting him to contact his drug counsellor to express his desperation and need for assistance. His tour manager subsequently arranged for him to enter a treatment facility located in Bournemouth. However, overwhelmed by fear, Willis made the impulsive decision to flee the centre immediately after arriving.

"I ran as far away from that place as I could," he explained. "I found myself at a little corner shop near the rehab and bought as much alcohol as possible. I sat outside someone's house and got absolutely wasted, drinking about eight cans of cider very quickly before passing out."

An Angelic Encounter on the Street

Willis vividly remembers being awakened by a man who discovered him lying on the pavement. In a disoriented state, he told the stranger he was supposed to check into rehab but had lost his way. Remarkably, the man recognised the facility—the Providence Project—as he had previously been through the programme himself and lived nearby.

"He picked me up, put my arm around his shoulder, and basically carried me to the door of The Provy," Willis recalled emotionally. "He dropped me off at the door, and I never saw him again. It's like a f*****g angel found me in the street and carried me there because he knew I needed to be there."

Rehab Admission and Wedding Day Motivation

Upon arriving, Willis found the clinic closed and feared he had slept through the day. He was eventually checked in, waking up the next morning filled with apprehension. This marked his third stint in rehab, but he noted it felt "very real" this time, as he could relate to the other residents, who were not celebrities or investment bankers.

Within three days, he committed fully to the programme, vowing to follow all instructions and heed the advice given. A significant motivator was his impending wedding to wife Emma Willis. "I got out of rehab on the Thursday morning and married Emma on the Saturday morning," he shared. "I turned up at my wedding day clean and sober. My drugs counsellor attended as protection because I was scared. I lasted the whole day clean and sober, though it wasn't the greatest of days for me."

Long-Term Recovery and Family Support

The couple wed at Rushton Hall in Northamptonshire on July 5, 2008, and now have three children together: Isabella, Ace, and Trixie. Willis admitted to experiencing a later setback that threatened his marriage, but he has now maintained sobriety for eight years. He credits Emma, 49, for her steadfast support throughout his recovery.

In August of last year, he celebrated this milestone with a heartfelt message to fans: "Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey so far. I've got some big plans for the next couple of years… let's see how far we can go." This story underscores the profound impact of compassion and the ongoing challenges of addiction recovery.
