Repair Shop Star Dom Chinea Confronts Emotional Setback in Workshop Finale

Dom Chinea, the celebrated craftsman from the beloved BBC series The Repair Shop, experienced a profound moment of frustration and heartache during the concluding episode of his spin-off show, Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop, which aired on Monday. The episode marked the end of a personal journey for Dom, who, along with his wife Maria and their dog Wendy, had recently relocated from the bustling commuter life of Kent to the serene yet rugged landscapes of West Cornwall.

Severe Weather Wreaks Havoc on Ambitious Project

In this final instalment, Dom was dealt a devastating blow when an overnight rainstorm severely damaged his newly established workshop. The adverse weather conditions left vital equipment, including his angle grinder and drill, soaking wet after being inadvertently left exposed. Upon discovering the extent of the damage, Dom expressed his dismay, stating, "Oh, for goodness sake. This place. This is hard. It's dealing with all of this. I know it was an ambitious project, but it is testing me to the least."

He further elaborated on the ongoing challenges, revealing, "Constantly problems, constantly things that need sorting, things leaking. I lie in bed and hear the rain beating at the window and thinking that is coming in sideways through the walls here and all of my stuff is getting wet." This emotional confession highlighted the immense pressure he faced, as he paused to admit, "It's a lot to deal with. It's hard to see an end at the moment."

Race Against Time to Secure the Workshop

With the summer sun fading and the urgency to make his workshop watertight increasing, Dom took decisive action. He managed to source 11 identical original Crittall windows, originally from Exeter University, which were perfectly sized for his needs. Dom explained, "These Crittall windows won't just keep the rain out. They'll also look great, too." As the episode progressed, the installation of these windows began, with Dom enthusiastically noting they were "perfect" for the task.

In addition to the windows, Dom created a custom tin sign for his workshop, which was mounted on the wall by the episode's conclusion. Reflecting on his progress, he remarked, "The vision of turning this old dairy into a workshop is becoming a reality. The wall is very nearly finished. Windows are going in. A flat floor that I now can work on is turning into something. Who knows what's next?"

Resilience and Hope Amidst Challenges

Despite the setbacks, Dom remained optimistic about the future. He acknowledged the difficulties, saying, "It hasn't always been easy. From walls and floors coming down to ponds being dug up and rocks being crushed. But I think me and Maria are ready for whatever Cornwall is going to throw at us next." This statement confirmed that he was officially open for business at his workshop, signalling a new chapter in his Cornish adventure.

Discussing the final episode in more detail, Dom revealed, "I finish my first Cornish summer just trying to weatherproof my workshop - I had a really ambitious plan for the windows - I managed to get hold of 11 Crittall windows, all the same size, and originally from Exeter university." He described the process of sealing them with old-fashioned glazer's putty as a time-consuming labour of love, underscoring the dedication required for such a project.

Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop is available for catch-up viewing on U&Yesterday and Channel 4, offering viewers a glimpse into his personal and professional journey in Cornwall.
