Woodpecker Named Rambo Smashes Ring Doorbell in 15-Minute Pecking Frenzy
In a bizarre and amusing incident, a determined woodpecker has been captured on camera breaking a Ring doorbell after a relentless 15-minute assault. The event unfolded outside the home of Stephen Brough, 71, in Tonbridge, Kent, when he tuned into the livestream from his Stick Up Cam recently.
Rambo's Relentless Attack
Stephen Brough was surprised to see the bird, which he has since affectionately named Rambo, pecking away at the camera. The footage shows the red-headed woodpecker posing for a close-up as it persistently attacks the device, eventually causing it to break. 'He was attacking for approximately 10-15 minutes before he finally broke it,' Mr Brough said. 'I didn't think woodpeckers would be interested in anything other than a tree!'
He added that Rambo displayed far more persistence than any spider, wasp, or moth that typically flocks to the lights of his high-mounted Ring cameras. Initially, Stephen admitted he was upset, noting that the camera 'is really useful for seeing if I have visitors or deliveries.'
Replacement and Wildlife Insights
Fortunately, Ring provided Stephen with a new camera to replace the one lost to the bird's antics, ensuring he can continue monitoring his home. According to The Wildlife Trust, Rambo's distinctive red head identifies him as a great spotted woodpecker, often mistaken for the rarer lesser spotted woodpecker.
This species is known for its impressive drumming abilities, capable of beating its beak against hollow branches or tree trunks at a stunning rate of 40 hits per second. Key features that confirm its identity include:
- A larger, stronger bill
- A strong black line leading onto the chest
- A white shoulder patch
The adorable yet destructive moment highlights the unexpected interactions between wildlife and modern technology, leaving homeowners both entertained and vigilant.
