Authorities in South Korea are conducting an extensive search operation after a wolf escaped from a zoo in the city of Daejeon, located approximately 150 kilometres south of Seoul. More than 300 individuals, including firefighters, police officers, and military personnel, are actively involved in the search for the escaped wolf. An official from the Daejeon fire headquarters confirmed the scale of the operation, highlighting the coordinated efforts to ensure public safety.
School Closure and Public Safety Measures
In response to the escape, Daejeon Sanseong Elementary School was closed on Thursday as a precautionary measure. A spokesperson for the Daejeon metropolitan office of education stated that the closure was implemented to protect students and staff while the search continues.
Images released by local media depict the wolf wandering on a road in Daejeon, a city with a population of 1.5 million. The male wolf, born in 2024 and weighing around 30 kilograms, escaped from the O-World theme park zoo on Wednesday.
Challenges in the Search Operation
The search has faced obstacles, including adverse weather conditions. Fire officials reported that drones equipped with cameras were deployed to aid in the search but had to be withdrawn due to rain, complicating efforts to track the animal.
Escape Details and Zoo Response
An official from O-World explained that the wolf managed to escape by digging through the soil at the bottom of its enclosure. Daily inspections are conducted before the zoo opens, and the absence of the wolf was noted during one such check. CCTV footage confirmed the escape method.
This incident follows a similar event in 2023, when a zebra named Sero escaped from a zoo in Seoul, capturing global attention. That zebra was eventually tranquilised and safely returned to its enclosure without injury.

As of Thursday, the wolf remains at large, with authorities continuing their search in surrounding areas. The escape has raised concerns about zoo security and animal containment protocols, prompting discussions on preventive measures.
