Baby Rabbits Rescued from North Sea Drilling Rig After Epic Cross-Country Adventure
In an extraordinary tale of survival, three baby rabbits have been rescued after an incredible journey that saw them discovered on a drilling rig deep in the North Sea. The intrepid trio are believed to have stowed away in a shipping container in Dundee, which was then transported to Aberdeen and loaded onto a vessel bound for the Cygnus gas field.
Discovery on the Rig
Two of the rabbits were initially spotted running around the pipe deck of the Valaris Norway rig, part of Ithaca Energy’s Cygnus platform. The crew acted swiftly, safely catching the adventurous bunnies to ensure their well-being. A third rabbit, equally daring, was later found hiding in a forklift pocket of the container when the vessel returned to the rig, completing the rescue of the entire group.
Safe Reunion and Recovery
All three rabbits are now safely reunited and doing well at New Arc Wildlife Rescue near Ellon in Aberdeenshire. The rescue centre has provided care and shelter for the animals, who have endured a remarkable cross-country adventure. This incident highlights the unexpected ways wildlife can end up in industrial settings, underscoring the importance of vigilance and compassion in such environments.
The journey from Dundee to the North Sea rig involved multiple stages, including transport to Aberdeen and a sea voyage, making the rabbits' survival all the more impressive. Authorities and wildlife experts are reminding the public to be cautious with shipping containers and other transport methods to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
