Chesney the Kangaroo's Great Escape: Three Days on the Lam in Wisconsin
In an extraordinary tale of animal adventure, Chesney the kangaroo made a daring escape from his petting zoo enclosure in Wisconsin, spending three days on the lam after scaling an imposing eight-foot fence. The incident, which unfolded at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, captivated the local community and required an extensive search operation to bring the high-jumping marsupial safely home.
The Great Escape
The unprecedented leap occurred last Wednesday around 11:15 a.m. when stray dogs rushed the enclosure, spooking the 16-month-old Chesney. According to his keeper, Debbie Marland, this sudden disturbance prompted the kangaroo to make his dramatic fence-scaling escape. The farm, located approximately 160 miles northwest of Milwaukee, typically operates from mid-May through mid-November, offering visitors interactive experiences with its 25 animals, including horses, sheep, alpacas, Kunekune pigs, Highland cows, and a Bactrian camel.
The Intensive Search Operation
Marland and her friends immediately launched a comprehensive search effort, trekking through the town and chasing numerous reported sightings. They employed innovative technology, renting heat-seeking drones that proved effective in narrowing down Chesney's wanderings. Despite remaining within a three-mile radius of the farm, the kangaroo kept his pursuers guessing with his elusive movements.
"I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him," Marland revealed. "I haven't done so much exercise in a very long time." The search reached a critical point on Friday when no one had spotted Chesney all day, raising concerns that he might have ventured into unfamiliar territory farther from the farm.
The Dramatic Recovery
The breakthrough came Friday night when Chesney was discovered nestled under a tree in a wooded area. Although searchers surrounded him, the fleet-footed kangaroo—capable of speeds up to 20 mph—managed to elude capture once again. The following morning, Marland returned to the area armed with Chesney's favorite treats and pieces of material carrying familiar scents from his enclosure mate, Kenny.
Just as searchers began packing up after finding no sign of the kangaroo, they spotted the long-eared adventurer with his distinctive oversized back legs approaching. Stacy Brereton, a friend who helps at the farm, demonstrated remarkable calmness during the critical moment.
"He had a very calm attitude when he walked up, obviously you could tell he wasn't in fight-or-flight mode, so I just went with that," Brereton explained. "I just stayed calm with him and I just kind of went and sat and let him come to me."
A Happy Reunion and Celebrity Status
Brereton believes Chesney responded to familiar voices and scents, eventually allowing her to scoop up the 40-pound animal. "I do believe he heard our comforting voices, he smelled the familiar smells of home and it just made him feel safe," she said, adding, "I'm just glad he loves me as much as I love him."
The community's remarkable effort in the search operation impressed Marland, who noted that "the community really did come together" for the kangaroo. Chesney has now achieved something of celebrity status, with a Sunshine Farm fan already writing a children's book about his adventures. Marland hopes to publish and sell the book to recoup some of the search costs.
Safety Measures and Aftermath
Following the successful recovery, Chesney was reunited with his marsupial mate Kenny, who shares the run of Marland's house. Though hungry and tired from his adventure, Chesney was otherwise healthy but will receive a veterinary checkup shortly. To prevent future escapes, Marland has announced that a new mesh top will be installed over the kangaroo enclosure, ensuring no more high-jumping hijinks can occur.
The two kangaroos, named for country-music star Kenny Chesney, have returned to their normal routines at Sunshine Farm, though Chesney's three-day adventure will undoubtedly become part of local folklore and farm history for years to come.
