Boots Launches High Street Walk-In Service for Weight Loss Jabs
Boots Launches Walk-In Weight Loss Jabs on High Street

In a significant development for accessible healthcare, Boots has launched a walk-in service for weight loss jabs on the high street for the first time. This innovative in-store service is specifically designed for individuals who might be 'popping out on their lunch break,' offering a convenient alternative to traditional online prescriptions.

Nationwide Trial Across Key Locations

The pharmacy chain has initiated this service as a trial across 17 stores nationwide, strategically located in major cities including London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. This marks the first time treatments such as Mounjaro and Wegovy are being offered directly on the high street, moving beyond the predominantly online prescription model that has dominated weight loss medication access until now.

Comprehensive In-Person Consultations

Customers interested in the service will undergo an in-person consultation with a qualified pharmacist in a private consultation room. During this session, their health and medical history will be thoroughly assessed to determine eligibility for treatment. This personalised approach ensures that individuals receive appropriate care tailored to their specific needs.

While general practitioners in England are permitted to prescribe Mounjaro on the NHS, this is typically restricted to severely obese patients with additional health complications. Estimates suggest that more than 1.5 million people in the UK are already using weight loss drugs, often obtained through specialist services or private prescriptions.

Boots' Commitment to Accessible Care

Jamie Kerruish, chief healthcare officer at Boots, emphasised the importance of offering multiple access points for healthcare services. 'We know that people have different preferences for how they access healthcare services – some seeking online support and some wanting in-person conversations with their local practitioner,' he stated.

'The launch of our in-store weight loss treatment service alongside our digital offer delivered through Boots Online Doctor means we can now deliver convenient care to people both online or in person,' Kerruish added. He further explained that these services are intended for anyone whose life is affected by obesity, acknowledging that for many, losing weight through diet and exercise alone can be challenging.

Integrated Support for Weight Management

'Weight loss treatment combined with 360 support to make lifestyle and behavioural changes can be a powerful tool in helping people manage their weight,' Kerruish noted. 'At Boots, we are here for every step of our customers' weight loss journeys.'

Boots has previously been offering Mounjaro, manufactured by Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk's Wegovy through its Boots Online Doctor service. The new in-store option expands accessibility, allowing customers to book appointments online or simply walk in at participating pilot stores.

The trial includes Boots stores in the following locations:

  • Nottingham, Victoria Centre, Nottinghamshire
  • Cardiff, Queen Street, Wales
  • Durham, Market Place, County Durham
