Christina Applegate Details Daily Life Confined to Bed by Multiple Sclerosis Pain
The Emmy-winning actress Christina Applegate has provided a candid and sobering account of her daily existence living with multiple sclerosis, revealing that chronic pain forces her to spend the majority of each day confined to her bed. Applegate, who is 54 years old, received her diagnosis of MS in 2021. Multiple sclerosis is an incurable autoimmune condition that directly impacts the brain and spinal cord, leading to a wide range of debilitating symptoms.
Struggling with Movement and Daily Tasks
In a recent interview with People magazine, published on Tuesday ahead of the release of her upcoming memoir titled You With The Sad Eyes, Applegate explained that the severe and persistent pain makes it extremely difficult for her to move around. Despite this excruciating discomfort, she remains fiercely committed to one particular daily routine: taking her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, to school and various activities.
"I want to take her; it's my favorite thing to do. It's the only time we have together by ourselves," Applegate told the publication. "I tell myself, 'Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.' And that's what I do."
Podcast Revelations and Symptom Management
The actress, famous for her roles in Married... with Children and Dead To Me, frequently discusses her health journey on her podcast, MesSy, which she co-hosts with Sopranos actor Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with MS. In a November 2024 episode, Applegate described moments where the pain becomes so intense that she "lays in bed screaming" due to sharp pains, deep aches, and a sensation of squeezing.
She elaborated on how the disease has progressed, affecting her hands to the point where simple tasks become monumental challenges. "I can't even pick up my phone sometimes, because now it's traveled into my hands. So I'll try to go get my phone, or get my remote to turn on the TV [and] sometimes, I can't even hold them. I can't open bottles now," Applegate revealed.
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms
Multiple sclerosis manifests through a variety of symptoms that can severely impact quality of life. These commonly include:
- Extreme fatigue and exhaustion
- Numbness or tingling in different body parts
- Problems with balance, coordination, and dizziness
- Persistent muscle cramps and spasms
- Memory issues and cognitive difficulties
Applegate humorously yet painfully illustrated her reality in the 2024 podcast episode, stating, "Jamie knows that I just lay in bed all the time. I mean, I worked for almost 50 years, so I'm kind of okay with it. But if I put my feet on the ground and they're hurting like extraordinarily bad to the touch, I was like, 'Yep. Gonna get back in my bed and pee in my diaper because I don't feel like walking all the way to the damn bathroom.'"
She quickly clarified, "I actually don't lay here and pee in my diaper. That's just a joke. But it's so freaking painful and so hard and so awkward." This reliance on what she calls a "sick sense of humour" has become a crucial coping mechanism as she navigates the relentless challenges posed by her condition.
