BBC Presenter's On-Air Blunder: Calls Damian Lewis's New Song a 'Dirge'
In a cringe-worthy live radio moment, a BBC presenter inadvertently insulted actor and musician Damian Lewis's latest musical offering right in front of him during a studio interview. The incident unfolded on Saturday morning, creating an atmosphere of palpable embarrassment and unexpected humour.
The Awkward Exchange Unfolds
The Homeland star, aged 55, was appearing on Romesh Ranganathan's popular BBC radio programme to promote his eagerly anticipated second rock album. As his track Sweet Chaos played in the background, traffic and travel presenter Sally Boazman interjected with the blunt question, 'What is this dirge?'
The situation escalated into further awkwardness when host Romesh Ranganathan, perhaps not quite believing what he had just heard, asked Ms Boazman to repeat her comment. This prompted a wave of laughter to erupt throughout the studio, mixing tension with amusement.
Lewis's Graceful and Humorous Response
Displaying considerable poise and quick wit, Damian Lewis attempted to brush off the accidental insult with a dose of self-deprecating humour. He responded light-heartedly, 'I put a lot of time and hard work into this, Sally. Into this dirge, into my rock ballads.' His reaction helped to diffuse some of the immediate tension in the room.
Recognising her humiliating blunder, Sally Boazman immediately began to apologise profusely to Mr Lewis and swiftly walked back her criticism. She elaborated, 'I listened to it more closely and I think it was very, very good. You've got so much talent, you can do so many things. You are a real polymath.'
Damian Lewis: From Acclaimed Actor to Serious Musician
Damian Lewis first found widespread fame for his portrayal of U.S. Army Major Richard Winters in the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. His career reached new heights when he won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for his role as US Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in the hit series Homeland. He also received prestigious award nominations for his powerful performance as King Henry VIII in Wolf Hall.
During the interview, the British actor revealed to Romesh Ranganathan that he has only begun to take his music career 'a bit more seriously' in recent years. He released his debut album, Mission Creep, in 2023 and had the honour of performing the national anthem at the Formula One Grand Prix in Silverstone.
His new single, Sweet Chaos, is scheduled for release in June. Fans can look forward to seeing Damian Lewis on tour across the United Kingdom throughout October and November, where he will perform tracks from his growing rock repertoire.
