G7 Foreign Ministers Demand Immediate Halt to Civilian Attacks in Iran War
The foreign ministers of the G7 group of nations have issued a strong call for an immediate cessation of attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the ongoing Iran war. This urgent appeal was made in a joint statement agreed upon during the second day of a G7 meeting held in France, which is serving as this year's host country.
Focus on Minimising Conflict Impact
In their statement, the ministers underscored the critical importance of reducing the conflict's adverse effects on regional partners, civilian populations, and essential infrastructure. They emphasized that protecting these elements is vital for maintaining stability and preventing further humanitarian crises.
The ministers highlighted the value of diverse partnerships and coordinated efforts to support initiatives aimed at mitigating global economic shocks. Specifically, they pointed to disruptions in economic, energy, fertilizer, and commercial supply chains, which have direct and severe impacts on citizens worldwide.
Reiteration of Navigation Freedom
Additionally, the G7 ministers reiterated the necessity of restoring safe and toll-free freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway is crucial for global trade, and its closure or disruption could exacerbate economic instability and conflict escalation.
The G7 members include the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with the European Union. Their unified stance reflects a concerted effort to address the escalating tensions and humanitarian concerns in the region.
This development comes amid reports that Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, warning that ships will face harsh measures, further complicating the geopolitical landscape and underscoring the urgency of the G7's demands.
