A brazen scammer has been apprehended in Rio de Janeiro after allegedly swindling a British tourist out of nearly £1,500 for a simple kebab, marking the latest in a concerning series of beachside frauds plaguing Brazil's iconic city.
Arrest on Copacabana Beach
The suspect was detained on Tuesday on the famous Copacabana beach, located just across from two of the area's premier hotels. According to authorities, the individual and an accomplice manipulated a payment terminal to drastically overcharge the unsuspecting foreign visitor for a meat skewer. Instead of the intended cost of 10 reais (approximately £1.50), the victim was charged 10,000 reais, equating to a staggering £1,480.
A Pattern of Seaside Swindles
This incident is not isolated but part of a troubling trend of seashore cons that have recently made headlines in Rio. In recent months, criminals attempted to charge two Argentinian tourists 7,000 reais (about £1,000) for two cups of açaí, while a Colombian visitor was tricked into paying 2,500 reais (around £400) for a caipirinha cocktail.
Perhaps the most shocking case prior to the kebab scam involved an Argentinian woman who ended up paying 20,000 reais (nearly £3,000) for a corn on the cob coated with margarine, which should have cost only 20 reais (about £3). The Spanish-speaking victim reportedly stated, "I don't understand numbers in Portuguese. I don't speak Portuguese," after falling into the trap.
Police Response and Oversight Issues
Patricia Alemany, the head of Rio's tourist police, informed the newspaper O Globo that her team has been intensively working to capture those responsible for the recent wave of crimes on Copacabana and the neighbouring Ipanema beach. She attributed the problem to a lack of government oversight, which has fostered a "disorderly" atmosphere on Rio's beaches, thereby enabling scammers to operate more freely.
Tourism Boom Amidst Security Concerns
Despite this spate of crimes, the majority of visits to Rio remain trouble-free, with a record number of tourists flocking to Brazil in recent years. Rio's international appeal has been significantly boosted by a series of massive beach concerts, including one last May by Lady Gaga that reportedly attracted over 2 million fans. Additionally, Colombian singer Shakira is scheduled to host a mega show on the beach next month.
In a recent interview, Marcelo Freixo, the outgoing head of the tourist board Embratur, revealed that Brazil welcomed a record 9 million visitors last year, compared to 6.7 million in 2024. Freixo suggested that part of this surge can be explained by a global desire for joy following the Covid pandemic and during a time when much of "the world is at war."
Many of these tourists originate from neighbouring Argentina, where Javier Milei's economic reforms have artificially strengthened the peso, making destinations like Brazil suddenly more affordable for middle and upper-class travellers.
