Ghislaine Maxwell Email Confirms Authenticity of Controversial Prince Andrew Photo
Virginia Giuffre's family has declared she has been "vindicated" after a newly revealed email from Ghislaine Maxwell confirmed the authenticity of the infamous photograph showing Prince Andrew with his arm around Ms Giuffre when she was just 17 years old. The correspondence, released as part of a vast trove of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents by the US Department of Justice, directly contradicts years of strenuous denials from both Prince Andrew and Maxwell regarding the image's legitimacy.
Family's Emotional Response to Vindication
Sky Roberts, Ms Giuffre's brother, told BBC Newsnight that the email "truly does vindicate" his sister, who tragically took her own life last year at the age of 41. "It shows that not only was she not lying this entire time, even though many people across multiple countries indicated that she was," he stated. "She was telling the truth, not only did Ghislaine mention that the photo was real, but that it was in the same house that Virginia had mentioned."
He described the moment as one where the family feels "really proud of our sister" and a "vindicating moment," while also urging people to "believe survivors." Amanda Roberts, Ms Giuffre's sister-in-law, tearfully explained the emotional "whirlwind" experienced by the family amid the document release, expressing profound sadness that Virginia was not present to witness this validation of her claims.
Maxwell's Draft Statement Reveals Crucial Details
The damning email, written by Maxwell in 2015 and sent to Jeffrey Epstein for approval, was intended as a draft statement to counter mounting allegations in the press. In it, Maxwell explicitly states "for the record as fact" that Prince Andrew visited her home in London in 2001 and that she introduced him to Virginia Giuffre, who was a teenager at the time. She confirms the photograph was taken that same night in her residence, ostensibly because Ms Giuffre "wanted to show it to friends and family."
However, Maxwell attempted to distance herself from the more serious allegations, claiming she had "no knowledge" of Ms Giuffre "having sexual activity" with Prince Andrew or any other prominent figures. She dismissed the allegations as "lies" and "salacious claims" made "purely for financial gain," while complaining about media harassment directed at herself, Prince Andrew, and lawyer Alan Dershowitz.
Direct Contradiction to Public Denials
This revelation delivers a significant blow to Prince Andrew's long-maintained defence, particularly his much-mocked claim during his disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview that he was at a Pizza Express in Woking on the night in question, rather than at Maxwell's London home. The email also contradicts Maxwell's own subsequent statements from prison, where she dismissed the photograph as fake and claimed no recollection of the meeting.
The Giuffre family's statement to broadcasters emphasised their hope that Prince Andrew would now "face criminal charges" and reiterated that Virginia was "a truth teller" who "never wavered" despite death threats and smear campaigns. They noted that four of the abusers she named are now "in prison, dead, or have become pariahs" and expressed determination to continue seeking accountability.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Fallout
The confirmation of the photograph's authenticity further undermines Prince Andrew's already severely damaged reputation and adds to the humiliation stemming from his association with Jeffrey Epstein. This connection has previously resulted in him being stripped of his royal titles and military affiliations, and more recently, being forced to leave Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate where he lived for over two decades with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.
The family's statement also highlighted that in the newly released Epstein files, a sworn deposition from Virginia Giuffre names most of her alleged abusers without redaction, expressing hope that more names will be revealed in future document releases. They affirmed their commitment to ensuring "the whole truth is out and Virginia's abusers have been held accountable," marking this email as a crucial piece of evidence in their ongoing pursuit of justice.
