Dan Norris, the independent Member of Parliament for North East Somerset and Hanham, has been rearrested by police on suspicion of multiple serious sexual offences. The 66-year-old former Labour minister is now under investigation for allegations including rape, sexual assault, voyeurism, and the invasive practice known as upskirting.
Police Investigation Details
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a man in his 60s, understood to be Norris, was initially arrested in April 2025 on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl, rape, child abduction, and misconduct in public office. That investigation began in December 2024.
The force has now executed a further arrest relating to additional allegations. These include suspicion of rape against a second woman, sexual assault against a third woman, and voyeurism and upskirting offences against a number of women.
Statement from Avon and Somerset Police
An official police spokesman provided clarity on the current status of the investigation, stating: "We are no longer actively investigating any sexual offences against children, but the original rape and misconduct in a public office investigation is continuing."
The spokesman emphasised the sensitive nature of such cases, adding: "All offences are alleged to have occurred between the 2000s and 2020s. Investigations into sexual offences are sensitive and complex and as a result it can take a significant amount of time for inquiries to be completed."
Police confirmed they are keeping victims updated on developments and ensuring they have access to necessary support. The individual, who has not been formally named by police but is widely reported to be Norris, remains on conditional bail while inquiries continue.
Political Career and Suspension
Norris has had a notable political career spanning several decades. He first entered Parliament in 1997, representing the Wansdyke constituency until 2010. During this period, he served as a junior minister under Prime Minister Gordon Brown and as an assistant whip under Sir Tony Blair.
After leaving Parliament, Norris became the directly elected mayor of the West of England, serving from 2021 to 2025. He stepped down from this role following his successful return to Parliament in the 2024 general election, where he achieved a significant victory by defeating prominent Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg.
The Labour Party suspended Norris last year following his initial arrest. He has since been sitting as an independent MP. Following his arrest, he also stepped down from his position as chairman of the animal welfare charity League Against Cruel Sports.
Ongoing Legal Process
The police investigation continues to examine allegations that span two decades, from the 2000s through to the 2020s. The complexity of historical sexual offence cases often requires extensive time for thorough evidence gathering and victim support.
As the legal process unfolds, Norris maintains his parliamentary position while the police conduct their detailed inquiries. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in investigating historical sexual offences and the importance of providing comprehensive support to all affected parties throughout such sensitive proceedings.
