Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande has indicated his preference to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer if he leaves RB Leipzig, delivering a significant setback to Liverpool's pursuit of a replacement for Mohamed Salah, according to The Athletic.
Diomande's Preference and Liverpool's Interest
The 19-year-old attacker, who joined Leipzig from Leganes last summer, has emerged as one of Europe's most coveted forwards after a stellar season in the Bundesliga. Diomande scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 33 league appearances, attracting interest from top clubs across the continent.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Diomande as they prepare to overhaul their attack following the departure of club legend Salah. However, the player believes that the project at PSG offers him the best opportunity to compete for major trophies and potentially win the Ballon d'Or in the future, sources told The Athletic.
Leipzig's Valuation and Liverpool's Offer
Leipzig are determined to hold out for a fee of at least €130 million (£112.1 million) for their prized asset. Earlier this month, Liverpool communicated their willingness to propose a package worth €100 million (£86.8 million), only to be informed that this would fall significantly short of Leipzig's demands.
PSG, the newly crowned European champions, are now in pole position to secure Diomande's signature, though any deal would require a record-breaking transfer fee for the club.
Liverpool's New Era Under Iraola
The Reds are entering a new chapter under head coach Andoni Iraola, who was appointed after Arne Slot was dismissed last month. Iraola faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad, particularly in attack, with Diomande seemingly out of reach.
Diomande's decision will likely disappoint Liverpool fans, but the club may now turn to alternative targets as they aim to strengthen their offensive options ahead of the new season.
