Former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez could hand the Blues a transfer boost this summer with his Atletico Madrid future in doubt. City sold Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in 2024 for an initial fee of £64.4m, potentially rising to £81.5m with add-ons. Despite his success at the Etihad, Alvarez sought a new challenge as Erling Haaland remained the first-choice striker, limiting his game time.
Alvarez's Performance and Interest from Rivals
Alvarez scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, following 29 in his debut campaign for Atletico. This form has attracted interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. Real Madrid recently submitted a £130m bid for the striker, which Atletico rejected, pointing to his release clause of £431m.
Alvarez's Statement on His Future
This week, Alvarez confirmed his desire to leave despite Atletico's firm stance. "Honestly, I don't know," Alvarez told reporters. "I don't think this is the right time to talk, but I can't hide either. I try to be an honest person. I've spoken with the people at the club, with those I needed to speak to. I think a transfer is the best solution for everyone, and I want to fulfil my dream."
Financial Benefit for Manchester City
If Alvarez is sold for the £130m that Real Madrid bid, Manchester City would bank between £4m and £7m thanks to a 10% sell-on clause on any profit from the 2024 transfer. This clause ensures City benefit from any future sale exceeding the initial fee.
