Manchester United are facing a midfield crisis after Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee ligament injury at the World Cup and missed out on top target Elliot Anderson, who is set to join Manchester City for £116 million. Former United striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the club to prioritise Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton as a replacement.

Ugarte was stretchered off during Uruguay's World Cup group-stage match against Spain after twisting awkwardly. The Uruguayan described it as 'the most serious injury a footballer can face' in an Instagram post. He wrote: 'Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country's history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.'
Anderson Snub and Wharton as Alternative
Manchester City have agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson worth around £116 million, leaving United with fewer midfield options. United had been linked with Anderson as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, whose exit was confirmed earlier this year.
Sheringham, speaking to BOYLE Sports, said: 'Adam Wharton missing out on the World Cup makes it a good time for Manchester United to get that deal done. I think Elliot Anderson is the better player but I do like the both of them. They're both very comfortable on the ball.'
He added: 'There's been a lot of talk about Elliot Anderson going to Manchester United but Anderson or Wharton would be a very good acquisition for me. [Michael] Carrick knows when you're Manchester United and you're playing at home at Old Trafford you need to camp in the other team's half. You need to box them in. You can't rely on hitting teams on the break when you're at Old Trafford but he will know that.'

Ugarte had been considered expendable this summer after struggling since his 2024 move from Paris Saint-Germain, but his injury now makes a sale unlikely. United must now accelerate their search for a midfielder, with Wharton emerging as a prime candidate.
