Tyre Spot North East Chain Acquired After 40 Years

Tyre Spot, a family-run chain of garages in the North East, has been acquired by Hampshire-based Micheldever Tyre Services after more than 40 years of operation. The deal, which involves 11 sites across the region including a distribution centre in County Durham, will see the garages rebranded under the name Protyre Autocare, Micheldever's retail arm.

Acquisition Details and Impact

The £35 million turnover company employs 148 people and was founded by the Shaw family over four decades ago. It provides tyres, servicing, and MOTs. Micheldever Tyre Services, established in 1972, is one of the UK's largest wholesalers with a retail division of 195 fast fit and mechanical service centres. The acquisition includes Tyre Spot's Drum Road, Birtley distribution hub, which will be operated by Micheldever.

Graham Mitchell, CEO of Micheldever Tyre Services, described the deal as an “important step forward” for the business. He said: “This acquisition strengthens our presence in a region where we already have established sites and customers, building further scale and capability while enhancing both our retail network and logistics infrastructure. It is a significant step forward in delivering on our growth strategy and reinforces our position as the UK’s leading tyre distribution and retail platform. By combining MTS’s national reach, scale and infrastructure with Tyre Spot’s strong local presence and reputation, we are continuing to build a business capable of servicing customers consistently and effectively across the UK.”

Integration and Future Plans

Tom Carver, chief commercial officer at Micheldever Tyre Services, stated that the focus is on ensuring a smooth integration for colleagues, customers, and partners. He said: “This acquisition supports our ambition to grow our retail network to 350 centres nationally by 2030, strengthening our national coverage while deepening our local capability. Just as importantly, Tyre Spot shares our strong customer-first culture and focus on service quality, making it a natural fit for us. We are bringing our teams together, recognising talented colleagues, established operations and strong customer relationships. We look forward to welcoming our Tyre Spot colleagues into the business, enabling further growth, additional opportunity for development and long-term success.”

Johnathon Shaw, managing director of Tyre Spot Ltd, expressed confidence in the acquisition. He said: “We've built our family-run business into the largest independent tyre supplier in the North East by providing the best quality service and products to our customers for more than 50 years. The success is down to always striving to improve, so we know the business will be in safe hands with Micheldever Tyre Services, a business which shares the same values and customer-first approach. We’re excited to see how the business evolves as it enters its next chapter.”
