A massive Telstra network outage has thrown Wednesday morning rush hour into chaos across Australia, leaving millions of mobile users and businesses without reception, calls, data, or EFTPOS services. Reports of the outage began before 5am local time on Wednesday, July 8, and spiked rapidly as Australians woke up, with outage tracking website DownDetector recording more than 7,000 reports by around 7am AEST.
Impact on Regional Trains and Businesses
In Victoria, regional train services have been temporarily suspended due to the fault. Operator V/Line cited a “radio network fault affecting all lines” and advised commuters to defer travel where possible, as limited replacement buses could be arranged to fill gaps. The outage has also hit businesses reliant on Telstra, with many retailers reporting disruptions to internet and EFTPOS services. Some took to social media to announce they are unable to process card payments at this time.
Wider Network Effects
The mobile outage extends beyond direct Telstra customers. Because Australia's vast landmass means other mobile providers use Telstra's network infrastructure and phone towers, customers of Boost Mobile, Belong, Aldi Mobile, Everyday Mobile, and Tangerine are also experiencing disruptions. This is an ongoing news story; further updates will be provided as they become available.
