A major safety recall for Frigidaire-branded minifridges has been dramatically widened, now affecting close to a million units across the United States. The move follows multiple reports of the appliances catching fire.
Recall Details and Faulty Components
On Thursday, 15 January 2026, Canadian distributor Curtis International added a further 330,000 units to an existing recall. This brings the total number of affected minifridges to approximately 964,000. The action was prompted by an official notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The safety watchdog states that the fridges contain electrical components that can short-circuit. This fault can ignite the plastic casing, posing a serious risk of fires and burns to consumers.
Specific Models and Retailers Involved
The latest batch of 330,000 recalled units are all model EFMIS121, which were sold exclusively through Target stores and its website for around $30. The CPSC has already received six reports of fires linked to this model, resulting in property damage.
This expansion follows an initial recall of 634,000 minifridges last year. Those models carried the numbers EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175. They were sold by retailers including Walmart and Amazon for between $36 and $40.
At the time of the first recall, there were 26 reported incidents of the products overheating, melting, or catching fire, along with two related smoke inhalation injuries.
What Owners Must Do Now
Consumers who own any of the recalled minifridges are being urged to stop using them immediately. The units were manufactured between January 2020 and December 2023.
To obtain a refund, eligible owners should visit the Curtis International website for instructions. The process requires them to:
- Cut the product's power cord as a safety precaution.
- Write the word "recall" in permanent marker on the fridge's front door.
- Send photographs of these steps to the company.
It is important to note that while Curtis International holds licences to make and distribute some Frigidaire products, the broader Frigidaire brand is owned by the Swedish multinational, Electrolux Group.
