Klopp and Gerrard Set for Anfield Return in Legends Charity Match
Klopp and Gerrard Return to Anfield for Legends Game

Anfield is set to welcome back two of its most iconic figures this Saturday as Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard return for a legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund. The event, presented by AXA in association with Forever Reds, will see Klopp assisting manager Sir Kenny Dalglish in the dugout, with kick-off at 3pm GMT on March 28.

Fan Discontent Fuels Speculation

This comeback comes at a time of mounting unrest among Liverpool supporters, with the defending Premier League champions struggling to secure a top-four spot. Some fans have even called for Klopp or Gerrard to replace current boss Arne Slot, though for now, they will have to content themselves with the pair's participation in this charitable fixture benefiting the LFC Foundation.

Legendary Legacies

Jurgen Klopp, who took over Liverpool in October 2015, transformed the club into a global powerhouse, winning the Premier League and Champions League before departing in 2024 after nine years. Similarly, Steven Gerrard, during his tenure as captain, lifted numerous trophies including the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Super Cup, cementing his status as a Reds legend.

Since leaving Anfield, Klopp has firmly stated he would never manage another English club, saying in 2024, "What I know definitely – I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That's not possible. My love for this club, my respect for the people, is too big." However, he left the door open for a potential return, adding last year, "I said I will never coach a different team in England so that means, if [I did return], then it's Liverpool. So, yeah, theoretically it is possible."

Gerrard's Willingness to Assist

Gerrard has also expressed his eagerness to help Liverpool in any capacity. In December 2025, he told TNT Sports, "I'll be brutally, brutally honest with you: I'd help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I'd help them in anything." This sentiment underscores the deep connection both figures maintain with the club.

Star-Studded Lineup

The legends match will feature a host of former Liverpool players, including Thiago, Sami Hyypia, Fabio Aurelio, Gregory Vignal, Martin Kelly, Yossi Benayoun, Ragnar Klavan, Mark Gonzalez, Igor Biscan, Jay Spearing, Ryan Babel, Florent Sinama Pongolle, Albert Riera, and Jermaine Pennant. Klopp shared his excitement ahead of the game, stating, "I'm really proud to be an Ambassador for the LFC Foundation. It means a lot to me, honestly. To be back at Anfield for the Legends game, alongside Sir Kenny [Dalglish] and his team, playing against the BVB legends, that is something special. It's going to be a very emotional and special day for me, for the LFC Foundation and for everyone involved."

This event not only celebrates Liverpool's rich history but also supports a noble cause through the LFC Foundation, offering fans a nostalgic glimpse into the club's glorious past while addressing current concerns on the pitch.
