Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has begun talks to become the new manager of the Germany national team. Germany are looking for a new boss following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, whose exit was confirmed after the country’s exit from the World Cup.
Nagelsmann's Exit and Germany's World Cup Campaign
Nagelsmann had guided Germany to the round of 32 at the World Cup, before losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout and missing out on the chance to face France in the last-16. The DFB confirmed Nagelsmann's departure earlier this week.
Klopp has been tentatively linked with a return to management ever since his departure from Liverpool in 2024, where he has since been working as the head of global football for Red Bull.
Klopp Confirms Talks with DFB
The 59-year-old has now confirmed that the German Football Association (DFB) have already opened talks with him about being the country’s new manager, although he explained why the move is not finalised just yet.
“Yes, I can confirm the talks,” Klopp said on Magenta TV, where he is currently working as a pundit for the 2026 World Cup. “Things moved along quite quickly. Julian [Nagelsmann] has resigned and the DFB is working on a successor. And in the course of these considerations, they approached me.”
Klopp added: “I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I've said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I've also made it clear that I'm interested in talks with the DFB. I need to talk to Oliver Mintzlaff. He's my employer. We've already discussed things. I assume he won't stand in my way. I was there for 19 months. It was an intense time. Ideally, everyone wins in the end. Red Bull needs to come out of this clean.”
Klopp Declares He Is 'Ready'
Klopp also confirmed that he is “ready” to step back into football management after a two-year absence from the dugout. “I'm more than ready now, so I'm prepared,” Klopp said.
The DFB had already confirmed earlier this week that they had expressed an interest in naming Klopp as the new Germany manager. “Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp,” part of a statement read, which also confirmed Nagelsmann’s departure. “He [Klopp] has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.”
