21 Sunderland Planning Applications: Padel Facility, Civic Centre

Sunderland City Council is currently considering 21 planning applications, ranging from major infrastructure projects to residential extensions. Among the notable proposals are work on the former civic centre land, a new padel facility, and upgrades to a sewage treatment plant.

Former Civic Centre and Sewage Works

Land at the former Civic Centre on Burdon Road (SR2 7DN) is subject to a partial discharge of condition 16 (Verification report) attached to planning application 24/00285/VAR for plots 89-94, 103-105, and 132-137. Separately, Northumbrian Water Ltd has applied for a formal screening opinion at its Sedgeletch Road sewage disposal works in Houghton-le-Spring. The proposed works include upgrading the existing sewage treatment facility and installing a 3km below-ground sewer transfer pipeline to a new outfall into the River Wear.

Padel Facility and Residential Developments

Offerton Grange Farm on Offerton Lane (SR4 9JL) seeks permission for a padel facility with associated parking. Meanwhile, the Eye Infirmary on Queen Alexandra Road (SR2 9HP) has submitted a request for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) screening opinion for the demolition of Sunderland Eye Hospital and redevelopment of the wider site for residential use. Additionally, Chapelgarth South of Weymouth Road proposes a variation of condition 1 (Approved Plans) to allow alterations to shared road surfacing as part of a rebranding initiative.

Home Extensions and Conversions

Several residential projects are also in the pipeline. Smee 18 in Washington Village (NE38 7AB) plans a first-floor extension above an existing single-storey extension and a loft conversion with a dormer window to the front, including additional cladding. At 54 Hunter Terrace (SR2 8SA), a two-storey side extension with single-storey front and rear extensions, plus rear dormer windows, is proposed. 2 Wigham Terrace in Houghton-le-Spring (DH4 7EG) seeks a single-storey rear extension with steps, a front canopy, and a ground-floor front extension with a first-floor balcony, along with alterations to windows and roof. 6 Aireys Close (DH4 5QA) proposes a garage conversion with a new roof. 12 Thornhill Crescent (SR2 7AD) aims to change use from a dwelling house to three self-contained flats.

Other Applications

Other applications include demolition of a former bus stop and WC block at Springwell Road in Gateshead (for Sunderland), redecoration and external repairs at the Flat Grey Horse Inn in Penshaw Lane (DH4 7ER), and crown lifting of lime trees at 9 Longlands Drive (DH5 8LR). At the Peel Centre on Spire Road in Washington, a non-material amendment to an earlier approval seeks minor alterations to site layout and car parking. Mill Garages (Audi) on Stadium Way (SR5 1AT) requests discharge of condition 3 (pre-occupation fixed external plant). Land at Castletown Way/Riverside Road (SR5 3JF) seeks discharge of condition 16 (Boundary Enclosure). The Co-operative Bank on Fawcett Street (SR1 1RF) plans to install a fascia sign with LED lettering and a digital display screen. Old House Cottage in Warden Law (DH5 8LX) wants to demolish sheds and erect a new garage and gates. 3 Willington Close (DH5 9GG) proposes a bay window to the front elevation. Land south of Glebeside in Hetton-le-Hole seeks a four-bed dormer bungalow with attached garage.
