Urgent Recall of Mercury-Laced Beauty Cream Over Organ Damage Fears

A beauty cream has been urgently pulled from UK shelves after testing revealed it contains dangerously high levels of mercury, posing what authorities describe as a serious chemical risk to consumers. The Office of Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has confirmed the immediate market removal of Faiza Beauty Cream, which is marketed as a skin-lightening product in distinctive purple packaging with yellow writing.

Immediate Health Warnings Issued

The OPSS has issued stark warnings about the product's mercury concentration, which measures at 19,170mg/kg (1.9%) - far exceeding any permissible limits. "Mercury is prohibited for use in cosmetic products," the regulatory body stated emphatically, adding that the cream fails to meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, the UK's Cosmetics Regulation.

Exposure to mercury through cosmetic use can cause wide-ranging adverse health effects, including:

  • Damage to internal organs, particularly kidneys
  • Serious harm to the nervous system
  • Circulatory system complications
  • Skin irritation and allergic reactions
  • Potential harm to unborn children during pregnancy

Consumer Action Required

The product has been distributed by Lajawab Foods Limited, and the OPSS advises all consumers who may have purchased Faiza Beauty Cream to stop using it immediately. "We recommend that owners stop using this product immediately and contact the distributor to request redress," the safety body instructed.

This recall follows a pattern of concerning discoveries in beauty products, with mercury typically appearing in skin-lightening soaps, creams, and even some eye makeup formulations. The substance's presence in cosmetics represents a significant public health concern given its cumulative toxicity and potential for long-term damage.

Recent Product Safety Concerns

This incident marks the second major beauty product recall in recent weeks, highlighting ongoing concerns about cosmetic safety standards. Last week saw the Pilgrim Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner Set removed from Amazon after containing Zinc Pyrithione, another prohibited cosmetic ingredient.

That product also contained undeclared allergens including hydroxycitronellal, hexyl cinnamal, and limonene, potentially triggering allergic reactions in sensitive consumers. Meanwhile, Hello Sunday The One For Your Eyes SPF 50 sun cream was recalled from Boots stores and online retailers after failing to meet its stated SPF protection levels.

The OPSS has included all batch numbers and expiry dates in the Faiza Beauty Cream recall notice, urging retailers to remove remaining stock immediately and consumers to check their bathroom cabinets for the potentially dangerous product.
