Meijer Recalls 39,000 Gallons of Water Over Black Substance Fears
Major Water Recall Over Contamination in Six US States

A major US supermarket chain has launched an urgent recall of tens of thousands of gallons of bottled water after customers discovered a mysterious black substance inside the containers.

Scope of the Recall and Product Details

Meijer is recalling nearly 39,000 gallons of its own-brand Steam Distilled Water following the alarming discovery. The affected product is sold in distinctive one-gallon plastic jugs with red caps. Officials have identified the specific batch using the lot code 39‑222 #3 and a best-by date of October 4, 2026.

The recall, which was voluntarily initiated by the retailer back in November 2025, remains active as investigations continue. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is overseeing the process and has confirmed the recall's details.

Where the Contaminated Water Was Sold

The potentially contaminated water was distributed across a wide region of the American Midwest. Consumers in the following six states are urged to check their purchases:

  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • Ohio
  • Wisconsin

The water was available exclusively at Meijer's own stores throughout these states.

Official Advice for Consumers

Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the contaminated water, the FDA and Meijer are taking no chances. The official advice is for consumers to immediately stop using the recalled water.

Authorities recommend that anyone who has purchased the product should either dispose of it safely or return it to their local Meijer store. The retailer is offering a full refund or a replacement for the recalled gallons.

The nature and source of the unidentified black foreign substance are still under investigation by both company officials and federal regulators.
