Restaurant Exposes Dine-and-Dash Duo in Bizarre Hair-Sprinkling Scam
Staff at The Dial restaurant in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, were left stunned when two diners refused to pay a substantial £165 bill, claiming their food was contaminated with hair. The incident, which occurred on February 11, took a farcical turn when management reviewed CCTV footage the following day, revealing one of the men appeared to deliberately tug hairs from his own head and sprinkle them over his steak dinner.
The Brazen CCTV Evidence
General manager Jez Hives, who has worked at the establishment for 25 years, described the scene captured on camera. One diner, wearing a yellow t-shirt and dark jacket, was seen apparently pulling hairs from his scalp before rubbing his fingers over his plate, seemingly depositing the strands onto his meal. Remarkably, the man then continued eating, apparently consuming his own hair in the process.
His companion, dressed in a blue jacket, black t-shirt, dark trousers and gold chain, claimed to be "put off" by the alleged contamination but nonetheless managed to finish his entire meal before the pair attempted their escape.
The Aggressive Confrontation and Failed Payment
After completing their meals, the two men became confrontational with staff, swearing and acting aggressively when informed they needed to settle their bill. The man in the blue coat immediately walked outside as his companion approached the manager, declaring they would not pay anything before turning to leave.
"It wasn't a conversation, it was just: 'We won't pay for this,'" Mr Hives recalled. "The manager chased after them saying they would call the police. There was lots of swearing. Customers were in shock as to what was going on."
Even as a restaurant worker pursued them with a card machine, the duo made their escape without paying for their substantial order, which included:
- A sharer steak
- A fillet steak
- Various sauces
- French fries
- Onion rings
- Multiple cocktails
Premeditated Scam or Desperate Act?
Mr Hives expressed disbelief at the brazen nature of the incident, noting the apparent hair-sprinkler repeated the action three times during the meal. "It's so brazen it must be something he does," he observed. "He must have bald patches all over his head. Even to think of doing that is just awful. Unbelievable, it was definitely premeditated."
The restaurant manager acknowledged that "dine-and-dashing" represents an inevitable challenge in the hospitality industry, but emphasized this particular scheme was exceptionally audacious. "I've been doing this for 25 years and at The Dial and I've never witnessed anything so mind-boggling," he stated.
Community Warning and Industry Solidarity
In response to the incident, The Dial has shared the CCTV footage with other local businesses to alert them about the potentially repeat offenders. Mr Hives revealed that several area restaurants had experienced similar incidents but lacked the surveillance evidence to identify the culprits.
"We contacted all the local restaurants to tell them," he explained. "A few had had similar incidents but never got CCTV. We want to unite as a town, welcome genuine customers and prevent anyone from taking advantage of our businesses."
The restaurant staff remained confident in their kitchen protocols, with all chefs wearing hats to prevent accidental contamination, further supporting their conclusion that the hair was deliberately introduced by the diners themselves.
This bizarre case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by hospitality venues dealing with fraudulent customers while demonstrating the crucial role surveillance technology plays in exposing such elaborate scams.
