A self-made millionaire has conducted a shopping experiment to determine which retailer offers the best value for money. Mark Tilbury purchased the same four items from Tesco, Home Bargains, and a BP petrol station, sharing his findings on TikTok.
The Experiment
Mark bought a sandwich, a 500ml bottle of Coca-Cola, a large bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate, and a packet of hay fever relief tablets from each outlet. At the BP station, which houses a Wild Bean Cafe and an M&S Simply Food store, the total came to £12.40. "Ouch," he remarked.
At a Tesco Extra superstore, the same items cost £7.40, nearly half the price, and included a free packet of McCoy's Thai Sweet Chicken crisps. At Home Bargains, the total was £7.25, just 15p less than Tesco, but without free crisps.
Reactions
One TikTok user commented, "The way we all just trust the most expensive store to be the best quality is a scam." Another noted, "This is a great breakdown of how 'cheap' branding can be deceptive." A third observer pointed out that the antihistamine at Home Bargains was fexofenadine, which is always more expensive than loratadine or cetirizine.
Mark, who left school at 16 without qualifications, now runs two multi-million pound companies and has grossed over £50 million.
