Gareth Bale has explained his decision to snub Manchester United in favor of joining Tottenham Hotspur early in his career, emphasizing that his choice was driven by a desire for regular playing time rather than financial gain. The Welsh winger, who later became a global star at Real Madrid, faced a similar crossroads to recent United target Mateus Fernandes, who completed an £85 million move to Spurs.
Bale Rejects United's Advances in 2007
Bale's connection with United dates back to 2007, following his breakthrough season at Southampton. At just 17 years old and playing as an attacking left-back, Bale attracted interest from the Premier League champions, who had just reclaimed the title and would go on to win the Champions League the following year. Despite United's dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson, Bale chose Spurs.
"I rejected Manchester United and went to Tottenham," Bale recalled in 2023. "At the time, United were the biggest team in the Premier League, winning trophies, with the best players and the best coach. The easy decision would have been to go to United, the biggest club in England, when I played for Southampton. You always want to be at the biggest clubs, but I made the decision to play football."
Prioritizing Development Over Trophies
Bale explained that his choice was not about money but about ensuring his development as a young player. "At that age, many players would look for money and want to go to a bigger club. It was important for my development to keep playing football, that's why I chose Tottenham," he said. The decision initially seemed risky, as Bale went without a win in his first 24 appearances for Spurs. However, a switch to the left wing following an injury transformed his career, leading to a 26-goal season in 2012/13 and a world-record transfer to Real Madrid.
Second Snub: United Bid More Than Madrid
United's disappointment with Bale did not end there. In 2013, when Bale left Tottenham, he again turned down the Red Devils, despite their higher bid. "United and Madrid were the two teams [who were interested]," Bale said on the Stick to Football podcast. "I did talk to United, yeah. They actually bid more than Madrid." He added, "I spoke with David Moyes. Not [Ed Woodward], maybe my agent did. My heart was set on Madrid."
Bale also revealed a gentleman's agreement with then-Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that allowed him to leave if a foreign club came in, particularly if Tottenham failed to qualify for the Champions League. "I had something in place with Daniel Levy, maybe more of a gentleman's agreement, because he didn't want to sell me to a rival. So if a team did come in from Spain, Italy or wherever, I could potentially go because if we didn't qualify for the Champions League, which we didn't, I was then able to go there," Bale explained.
Legacy at Real Madrid and Retirement
Bale spent nine years at Real Madrid, winning five Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns. After leaving Spain, he signed for Los Angeles FC and captained Wales at the 2022 World Cup before retiring at age 34. His career stands as a testament to the value of prioritizing game time over immediate success, a lesson that resonates with young players today.
